Default Question about back pain

I know this is not exactly C3 related but it does tie in.I have a bad back, have for some time. There are days when it's real hard to get in and out of the Vette.I've been to several Dr's and besides having an operation all they can do is treat the pain.I just got put on a new to me drug.I was just wondering if anybody has any experience with it.It's called Fentanyl and comes in a patch you stick on your body.I read all the info that comes with the medicine and it sounds kind of scary.I hope this works because I've been off work for about two months and I can't drive my Vette very often.Once I'm in all is well it's just getting in and out thats a problem. Thanks

Check out the info on this link:
http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_fentanyl.html

Quote "Fentanyl binds only the mu receptor approximately 75 to 100 times stronger than morphine."

Sounds like a major pain killer.

I had the second surgery on my back in August. I could hardly get in and out of any car. If the pain is bad enough to need major drugs, you might want to consider surgery. I'm sorry I waited so long. I am doing GREAT now.

As an employee of the Mayo Clinic, I wish I could offer more advice on this subject. Ironically enough, about a week after I purchased my vette, my back went out and I was out of work (and getting in or out of my vettte) for about 3 or 4 weeks. Being I work in financial analysis, I say come to the clinic in Rochester, MN... as long as you have insurance!

I'm an MD that works in Workers' Comp. Surgery should only be considered as a last resort, and only for certain types of injuries. Are you doing your exercises that you learned in therapy (if they in fact ever sent you)? A strong back is the best defense against pain and debility for most back patients.

I found that losing weight (and my "pot belly") took care of back pain problems.

Well I'm not in thearphy yet.MRI shows bludging disk.a degentering disk and some arthritus back there in my lower back.I'm not overweight.I guess after 30 some years of work has taken it's toll.My sister has had surgery about 6 mos ago and is still not much better.I'm susposed to go in for a bone density scan next week.Besides the patch I'm also on vicodin 10/500.Doc says only thing left is surgery.I'm going to stall on that until I see how my sister's turns out

Man I feel your pain, (literally). I was never offered the patch and I weighed out all my options, I also have back problems, I have a buldging L4-5 disc, and a L5-S1 disc herniation with radiculopathy, anlong with disc degeneration. Have gone through a year of physical therapy along with several types of pain medicine with no help, The only other option was surgery, which wasn't guaranteed and could possibly worsen the problem, So I chose not to have it. And I gotta agree, gettin in and out of the vette can be a pain in the A$$. Be careful on what activities you do, real easy to throw your back out again, don't ask me how I know.

Maybe i'll open up the can of worms, and ask: Have you considered chiropractic medicine?

As a biochemist, I'm extremely cynical and very suspect of supposedly scientific treatments, but I've had very good luck with chiropractors. I was in a car accident a year and a half ago, and the chiropractic care my wife talked me into worked very well. It's true I have to go in periodically to get "tuned-up" but I like to think of it as similar to getting a physical and adjusting yourself accordingly when things are out of wack.

Just a second opinion. Good luck, and I hope you can get yourself fixed up.

After major back surgery 10yrs ago I still do my therapy exercises almost every day. Even increased their effectivness by adding weights to the exercise. Without them, I would never be able to do the "horizontal rhumba"

Strong stomach muscles are also a must to support & strengthen the back, and keep back pain away.

I had back pain for over a year and it got to the point I could not function or get in and out of the vette.I have a bludging disk,a degentering disk and some arthritus back there in my lower back. I had injections in my lower back done under an x-ray in a series of 3 treatments 2 weeks apart. It was a injection of cortisone and an anti-inflamitory. It shrinks the nerves that are giving you the pain. I have been pain free for about 4 years now.Ask your doctor(or find a new one). I was refered by my primary care doctor. The guy that did mine only does this kind of procedure. Save the knife as a last resort. good luck....it gave me my life back!

I suffered greatly with back pain for a 5 year period. I missed work, spent days at a time immobilized lying on my back, gave up most physical activity, no running or basketball, was living my life as a semi-invalid.

I was totally cured of back pain by following the methods of Dr. John Sarno. He wrote a few books. I suggest you get one and read it. Much cheaper, easier and less invasive than surgery, drugs, or even chiropracter. The results for me were nothing short of miraculous.

Notice how everyone has a different suggeston or "cure" ? All these different treatments, drugs, exercises, surgeries.... why so many different approaches? Why after all these years have they not figured out what causes back pain? Notice how epidemic it is? Seems like everyone has back pain.
