Flat spots on tires
First of all does this happen when a car is left for an extended period of time?

It used to but with modern radials it is not a problem.

I'm not disputing this, but I have read that it is good to up the tire pressure to around 44lbs, which is supposed to help prevent flat spotting. Of course you need to lower it when driving the car.

When I would let my 96 set in the garage for a while I would notice it would ride rough for a little while. Shortly the ride would be smooth again. I had the car for about 5 years I guess and put about 5000 miles on it so it spent some time setting around.

On the older bias ply tires this was an issue, but not with todays radials

We get them in our mud truck. 40 inch tires are to expensive in radials just to be driving in the mud.
