Default Need Some Advice.

Ok I have a 1978 corvette. Since i recently got it I have noticed some "bubba" who owned it before messed with alot of electrical.(mainly the radio) There is a 1990's maybe 1980's Panasonic Radio Installed. Then(this is where i need help) Under the stearing wheel there is a **** that moves left and right,It is chrome,It also has a plate behind it for the speakers. Like for where the sound will come out of what speakers.(fade, and something else) Then to the left of it there is a black button,I push it and nothing happend. I was just wondering.

This button and **** Under the stearring wheel Is this factory or added??Can some people with 78's or 79's post some pictures of below there stearing wheel.

Ps I will post pictures of these mystery things tomorrow.

Seems like something funky that bubba installed. Perhaps a 'fader' kob? Black button?...hmmm...If it doesn't work, trace it, remove it and install an up-to-date stereo system you know will work to your liking.

It's some bubba'd stereo install - every radio that I've owned had a fader and balance switch integrated

I believe the easiest way to clean up that mess is to remove all the wires/switches that are not original, hope there's no hole drilled in the plastic....

It's deffinatly drilled in the plastic. So noone else has a black button or anybutton at all below there steering wheel??. It is like right below the tilt telescopic colom. Right on that plastic piece. I will post some pictures of it tomorrow. Well yes it is drilled and that means i will have to buy a new one. But thats not the worse part of it hear this out.
SOME BUBBA DUMBASS drilled through the gas lid and THE EMBLEM ON THE LID(instead of going up a little more and not drilling throught the emblem) Just to put a cb radio antenna there. When i seen that i wanted to find out who owned the car and id that and punch them. A rear emblem isnt cheap but the whole is under the emblem for the gas lid so i am just replacing hte embelm.

Interior parts are not cheap, just live with the hole for now or fill it with fiberglass resin and fiberglass mesh on the back... paint to match... done... it's not that noticeable under the steering wheel anyways...

The rear emblem is probably around $60 or so.... where on the emblem is the hole ??? ...... fill the hole and re-paint the emblem.... I'm sure there are more important things that need attention and some $$$

I'd definately work on the brake system first....

Well first things first Get car with all new fluids,Make sure it runs well. Also I am going out and spening alot of money on cleaners. The last couple owners were messy,Everything is sooo black in the interior,DDIIRRTTYY. I am going to go out buy the best Leather Cleaner, and Leather Protector. Then i am buying the best Carpet cleaner and plastic cleaner. It will need new carpets and maybe back parts to the seats. But for now cleaning is a better idea.
I will show pictures of everything, It does need a bit of work.

Why don't you let a detailer clean it up for you. Best 125.00 you could spend on it plus they have the best cleaning chemicals too.

Just got the car,NO tags,Plates,Broken Ujoint,Needs Fresh Fluids because it sat for so long. Once i get all that, Maybe. I just dont trust them enough. You know they might say it needs a "test drive". Plus right now it needs more work, and limited money right now. So paying someone for soemthing i can do for most likly cheape, why pay extra. I will look into it though. Its a very good idea,Thank you,i will acually call this detailing place tomorrow get a price and see what they can do.

When you refer to a "black button" under the steering wheel, is it a little black post that you can pull down and push back up? If so, that is a vacuum switch for your headlights. It keeps them in the up position when you turn the headlights off. It will only do anything when the engine is running and producing vacuum.

Nope its a push button,Like a black button that you just push in. Its a button that is like a power button on your TV's remote but hard and plastic. Its just a push button like that. I will post a picture when i come home from school tomorrow, I will take the car cover off and take a picture of these buttons,Then i will start it quick and hit hte button see what happends.I am 99.999%sure its not for headlights well make that 100% sure.

It's probably a pushbutton for the horn. It's a quick fix to get a car past inspection rather than actually fix the real horn.

You should look into getting an Assembly Manuel. It’s like putting together a big model car.

It sounds like an epi center or epic center cant remember which it is called. Alot of aftermarket stereo installs with subs use it to lower the bass. It will have a power switch and a dial **** with a circuit board and speaker type connections in the back. They are banned in SPL contests but Im not sure why.

I'm sorry to be the one to tell this to you, but the only way to fix the problem is a complete nut and bolt frame off restoration. Yes, it will be alot of work and $ but in the end you will have a radio that works.

The bubba I bought my car from added a black button, only he placed it between the seats. Turns out it was the horn. Had to rip it out and fixed the horn. Of course I found out he also cut every wire to all the dashes and hot wired them to speaker wire going through the a/c relay. But that's a whole nuther story....
