I would like to fab a test pipe for my '81.
does anyone have dimensions or dwg's?
My car is stored for the winter and hard to get to.
I want to lose the converter until I get my duals.
No inspections for me to worry about.
get a flex pipe and fit it up...tack weld some joints so the pipe doesn't lose its contour and take it to a muffler shop to bend a pipe and weld the flanges...To do this you will have to have access to your car...
i just took my 81 up to a muffler shop thats owned by a frend of a buddy if mine.
and he cut the old cat out and put a strat pipe in there ,flared it so it would slip over the old pipe and welded it.
i have a stock motor and it as more power now and idels good to,it didnt afect the o2 cencer.it was a test pipe to see how it runs, now i will get the duels next and maybe some headers.
take the cat off, clean out the inside, put it back on, if it helps performance great , cost zero .if it does not sound right to you have a test pipe made .happy with my open cat .
Thanks everyone.
I work for a stage rigging manufacturer and have a fab shop at my disposal.
I was going to just weld up a pipe w/ a couple of plates if I had the dimensions.
I guess there are easier ways to go about it.
Merry CHRISTmas!
I got my test pipe on Ebay, pipe and shipping, $48.01...it's an exact fit for my 76...I guess if you can weld it up yourself it would be cheaper, my situation wasn't that easy...I am toying with gutting the cat once it's out, but don't want the tin can sound, and....there is that nagging inspection question still hanging over me that I haven't really got an official answer to...so in spring the pipe's going on and we'll see what Mr. Inspector has to say...can always put the cat back on...good luck
dont worry about the tin can sound have never heard one yet with that sound .but if you try it and dont like it you can always spend the money on a test pipe .
Don't waste your time. You're only going to gain 5hp over a high flow cat, and you'll dirty up the air. Unless you have a hardcore engine, it's really not worth the extra pollution. And from the fact that you have stock exhaust, I'm willing to bet that you have the stock engine, in which case it's really not worth it. I have about 500hp and I'm running dual cats.
1981 and 1982 had cats that plugged up and were not verry good flowing even when new.gutted cat, test pipe or a new cat could make a big improvement
I totally agree, the original cats sucked. But don't do something that a stupid ricer would do to get closer to triple digit hp weld a high flow cat in there.
