Here in Texas it is not optional. Without tint the interior gets so hot the vinyl dash can crack. I have 35% tint on the side windows and 20% on the rear. The % is the amount of light it lets through.

It can be removed. Autoparts stores sell a spray that makes it much easier. It seeps through the tint to the glue and dissolves it.

In MN there are laws as to how dark the side windows can be. However, I never seem to have the windows up (or the t-tops on) so it doesn't really matter. I'd do a quick double check on local laws before you spend significant money on a good tint job.

I had the windows in my 63 Split Window tinted this year - wish I had done it years ago. I helps cool down the interior and allows the "Vintage Air" to work much better. The C2 coupes are extremely hot by nature, and this helps a great deal. It can be removed - it is a film that has an adhesive which removes easily.

Good luck.

If you want to remove tint, here's how you do it:

Go buy a bottle of Windex (or any glass cleaner that has ammonia in it).

The ammonia will help break down the window tint and allow it to come off relatively cleanly. This is cheaper than buying special "tint remover" formula, and also why you should NEVER use Windex on tinted windows (something my ex girlfriend did on my tint and ruined it).

Also, check with local laws; San Diego County will allow the back windows to be tinted but the passenger and driver's side windows can only be tinted to block 10% of incoming light.

Seems that about 20 years ago some cop pulled up on a guy with heavily tinted windows for a routine traffic stop, and the guy reached over to his glove compartment and pulled out a gun, then waited for the cop to step up to his window fully unaware, then proceeded to open fire on him at nearly point blank range. While I may not agree 100% with a lot of automotive laws, this one makes sense to me.

Texas law is 35% side, 20% rear transmit which is 65%/80% tint.

What are your opinions on tinting your own windows? Anyone ever tried it, and how long did it last. I find most people that tint there own windows themselves end up with bubbles eventually.

Any quality tint installation will not bubble.
