I have ordered 2 cans of '74 Silver dye from Wilcox.
My questiion is: is the dye opaque/strong enough to use successfully on a black E-Brake Console. One of the "made in black" type that is supposed to be dyed/painted your color. Is the dye strong enough to hide the black or do I need to put down a coat of primer first?
Or am I better off just spending the extra $$ and getting a silver one to start with? I've got the dye coming to touch up some other plastic parts to begin with.
Are the ones you purchase already colored silver made from Silver material or are they actually black and have been painted by the supplier?
Well, if that dye is like the type sold by corvette central or ecklers it is in fact lackher (or however you spell it) and will cover really well. I used a product called Bulldog to prime with and did not use the quart of gray dye primer I bought. The bulldog makes a very good base coat and makes the dye stick to almost anything. It may take you several light coats but the dye dries really fast and flattens out well and looks great. I did all the plastic parts inside and they look new. Clean well first.
The ones you buy that are pre-colored are made out of dyed plastic so if you scratch/nick it the scratch is the same color. The spray bomb may work out OK but won't hold up on a high wear item.

I bought one color matched, but it was a painted/dyed black console, and it already has nicks in it, so I was completely disappointed with that approach. Now, the old one was pretty rotten to start with, so it is still better, but I felt like it was a waste of money (it's not durable, in my opinion).
Where can you get one that is "solid" color matcheD?

Brian.
I also wanted one color matched, and I bought one from Corvette Central and when I got it , it had been spray painted with the dye and apparently put in the shipping box wet as it had marks across the top. The dye never did dry properly and the console was useless to me. Still have it, not worth the hassel of arguing with them. Be careful...............LT
Thanks to all for the feedback. Got the paint today. Finished putting in carpet this evening. Will start on seat covers tomorrow.
Gonna prime the console and paint. After what has been said here I won't be supprised if the paint wears through. When that happens I'll buy a solid colored console. I hadn't thought about the high wear the console takes. Good point.
