I'm having issues on the 71 attaching the upper fender corner molding - these were such a pain on my 70 that I decided to keep them off when I owned it, but I'm now determined to attach them on the 71.
I have what I believe to be the correct clips and screws to attach but the clips seem too small to bite and stay attached to the fender body piece. The body is too thick there for the clip to attach and then slide the upper molding on top of it. If I could get it to stay, what's the trick in keeping it from slipping off... what a pain.
The clip has small barbs facing inwards on the body side of the clip. I have seen 1/16 inch holes, 1 for each barb, thru the surround lip. I believe this is to aid in the retention of the clip. Yes, the clips/mouldings are a PITA!
Those clips shown are VERY diffrerent from the ones I have in my hands and are trying to use. The ones you mention at the 2 sites are the same and state "If your windshield molding and attaching clips are falling off, broken, worn-out or missing, replace them with our complete clip sets and paint-to-match trim molding." I don't think these are the correct clips.....
I'm trying to use the clips listed at Ecklers' as A2249....
Ohhh sorry about that, I thought you meant the upper birdcage corner mouldings - I know what pieces you mean now, but I have no idea how to attach them.
No problem majic1984, thanks for trying to help....
I may have to get slightly larger clips or try to grind down the inner part of the body where the clip attaches so that it's not so thick, then get the clip to fit oin the body first, slip on the molding and finally screw it in place...
The clips that I mentioned that Ekler's has don't have barbs so I may look for some that are a slightly bigger which have them.
Yes, they are difficult to attach. You can cut a slot for the clips on the underside of the fender, through all the windshield sealant (that always seems to be under there) and shave the fiberglass a bit with a dremmel tool. A small cutting wheel on the dremmel (VERY CAREFULLY) will do the trick. A small bead of silicone along the top edge of the fender will also help hold it in place.

I was planning on using the dremel tool (not sure what else would even work). I was wondering what else to use to help hold it in place too...
I had a similar situation. Here's what I found. Maybe this is the case for you. Apparently the new clips that I used were a little different than my originals. I did a lot of swearing before I came up with this solution (as well as scratching my newly painted fender).
Great drawing!!! Where did you get these clips - with the tang?? and it's doubled back too, more like a lazy "S" shape. My clips are just a "C" shape... and when I get them on the fender part and try to push on the molding - they just slip off.... (no tang).
