Default noob question....

I pulled the hose that connects the passenger side of the carb (quadrajet) to the air filer, and it runs a lot better. What is this and do I need it?

I think your talking about the heat riser vacuum line on a stock air filter. The line runs from the carb to valve under the air filter and then from the valve to the baffle on the fresh air intake duct. Basically, this directs warm air from around the exhaust manifold into the carb to help a cold engine warm-up faster. Once warm, the baffle should open to allow cold air in.

Ok... but after I took that off the engine ran a lot better. What is my issue here? What should I do?

probably you need to examine all of the hoses they may have been all hooked up wrong over the years...if the car started to run better what comes to mind is that something was restricting air flow....

I guess I'll check the hose... could it be a bad heat riser? I mean it raises the idle and increases acceleration a lot... something is up.
