Just wondering what you guys are runnin'.....multi-vis? straight 30 or 40 or ???????????????? Synthetic or dino??? '73 with a 383 I got a few mos. back, built in '97, 'bout 10K on it, I put Mobil 1 in and wondering if I hadn't of just stayed with a straight or multi-vis dino.
i was told today ,, by builder ,,to run moble 1 ,,,,10 w 30 in my 383 ,,,but not until i get 1000 miles on it. first i gotta get 100 miles at 50 mph, steady! also said if extremely hot outside and going to be hard on car(road tour ect) can run 15 w 40 or 20 w 40 mobil 1 but normally 10 w 30 mobil 1 should be fine,,, i never used synth. oil before so ,, im a first time myself,, and to change after 3,000 miles..also look into moroso # 22460 (small block chevy)racing type oil filters for peak filtration 27 microns no back flo

i have about 3k miles on my rebuilt motor and have not switched to synthetic yet..... although i did buy the castrol dino/syntec blend for this next oil change.... i may just go with the blended mixture and change the oil every 1k-2k or 6months whichever is longer
I currently run Amsoil 10w30 in everything I own (even my mower). After the 383 gets broken in it will go straight to Amsoil as will the tranny & all greases. I like Amsoil, but others are just as good. Synthetics rule!
Valvolene Racing 10W-30 for the first 1000 to 1500 miles, because of the higher zinc. Then will change to Castrol GTX 10W-30.
I change oil twice a year and put on about 1000 miles in a good year. With the alleged extended drain intervals (milage) with synthetics, I would be changing oil every 5-6-7 years. Don't like that.
Thanks to all for your responses. Just got to wondering about leaks I've read about in other threads 'possibly' related to synthetics. Maybe just B.S.?

Thanks.
p.s. dealing with an intake leak now.
You can take a look at this recent update to AMSOIL's motor oil comparision and see that in general, all the synthetics outperform the semi-synthetics and petroleum based oils. Comparative Motor Oil Test
When running a mult-viscosity oil, keep in mind that an oil requires viscosity improvers, or VIs, to increase the spread. As these VIs breakdown, the oil will go out of grade, particularly the cold grade. Mineral oils require more VIs than synthetics do. A good 10w30 synthetic, e.g. not a group III synthetic, requires very little VI to meet the 10w standard. So, if you go with a multi-vs mineral oil, I would stick with short oil change intervals.
