Default 71 headlight door open warning sw/light

When the headlights pop-up and are on, is the headlight door open warning light supposed to stay on the entire time or does the light extinguish after some time??

Thanks,

The light is supposed to extinguish when the lights reach the full up position. The problems lies in the switches themselves. Lots of times they are broken. I have a few pics of what they should look like. Let me find them and I will post them.

With the headlight raised.

With the headlight down.

Seems the switches are ok and the little activation button depresses correctly. Here's the issue, the driver side button depresses correctly when the headligh is raised, the passenger side - though raised - doesn't come into contact with the piece that wil depress the button. With the passenger side raised what I see is more like the picture you posted of the headlight down - but the contact is off by about 1/4" or so.

Sounds like an adjustment? but where? to the actuator screw to allow the mechanism to come up more? I'm not quite sure what to adjust now....

There is an adjustment in your future. It's been such a long time since I messed with my light I can help you on where and what needs adjustment. I think you would adjust it by lengthening the actuator rod. You can do what I did and tie-wrap the button down. (Read Bubba). My passenger side switch's threaded part broke off and my switch is just hanging (I did tie-wrap it out of the way). I'll eventually get a new one some day to get the Bubba tag off my shirt.

I'll mess with it. I suppose the springs have to come off then the cotter pin holding the actuator rod pin in and remove the rod itself. Then loosen the actuator arm by the turning it counter clockwise on the threaded rod - lengthening the rod and forcing the headlamp up higher... then put the whole thing back together.

Those springs look like a pain to get off then back on though...

With all that said - sounds like Bubba had a good idea with the tie wrap...

I got my switches through The Last Detail (about $17.00 each, I think) and I had to put in a shim on mine to get the lamp to go off at the fully raised position. Good luck

Indicator on the 71 is on the center gauge bezel, passenger side, upper right corner, lower lens - where there are 2 lenses together - Upper lens says "Door Ajar" and the lower one says "Head Lamps". The pair are to the right of the Water Tempo gauge.

Ecklers description says "1969-74 Door Ajar Warning Lens"
