There is always a dabate on what to do with a tank sticker...once you find it! Remove it or leave it. The thinking is that once removed from the tank...it lessens the verifiability that that particular tank sticker came off of that particular vehicle...or something like that.

It's suggested you take pictures of it in place...and leave it there. That way you can show it has one and that's its still in place. The value is that it is there and documents the vehicle options as it departed the factory floor.

An additional consideration is that once you've removed the tank...these things are brittle, difficult to read if on a high-mileage car and the glue could cause difficulties in removal.

But now 73 was the first shark model to sport the new landscape style build sheet and therefore is always of interest. If you do photos post and let us look! good luck and keep us posted.

Default No luck

Well I tried to get in there with a camera to get some photos but there just is no room. I can read some of it with a mirror but think the only way to really see what it says and get photos I would have to drop the tank.. So you may have to wait a while to see any photos unless I remove it.... ... Thanks

mine on my 71 is vewry brittle and glued on. I don't think it would come off without destroying it. I want to repaint the tank what should I do?

Wish I could advise you but I too am looking for answers... Mine at least is in very good shape.... The page is complete and still has the little holes on each side where it feed through the computer. It appears on each side in the center to be glued for about 1 inch with a very hard plastic type glue...The big question is to leave it there or try to take it off, without damaging it , to verify the options and then replace it... Anybody got options??????

I razored mine off. I figured, why leave it there to deteriorate more. No one can see it when it's on the tank so how do they know if it's even there? I really don't think it will diminish your value to remove it, clean it and keep it in a plastic envelope. If I remove any of my gas tanks I usually remove the sticker and save it at the same time. The new owners always seem to appreciate it.

I was thinking about putting that wide clear packing tape over it to hold it together than try to get it off with a razor blade

That would work... They make a wide plastic that they use to cover books with ... That would at least hold it all togeather while you attempt to get it off... Good luck..

Mine is out. I'd rather have it sitting in my house then turning to dust under the car. As much as it may lessen the value by not being on the car, I'd rathe have it that way. Eventually it will be faded and brittle to the point where it will not be verifiable anyway. It's the lesser of two evils in my opinion.

I carefully removed mine with a parts grabber. I immediately scanned it and photocopied and enlarged and enhanced it. The print seems very delicate and any rubbing will erase it. You can usually make out most everything if you have a valid option list available to compare to. I was lucky, the spot I really wanted to see was the delivery dealer.

With a 73 your vin is going to identify the engine, so I think you are ok to remove and try to preserve the tank sticker. I think the problems really surround a bigblock, say a 435 hp from 67 - 69 where people are afraid the car was originally smallblock converted to bigblock. Once you remove that tank sticker you create suspicion as to authenticity, but with a 72 or later it is less of an issue (because vin tells engine)

Default Here's mine...

Since my '73 was modified when I bought it, I wanted to know for sure just what options were actually on it new. Got it out through the gas door. Don't think it would have been any better with the tank out, maybe, but sure BRITTLE!!!

There are differences in the type of tank sheets on '68 thru '72 cars.

A major change occurred in 1971. Those of you with sheets attached for 1968, 1969 & 1970 will probably fair a little better than those with 1971 & 1972 sheets.

For any rare high hp model, I would definitely recomend removing this document if your lucky enough to have one and it's readable. It need to be archived in a acid free document holder, otherwise it will continue to deteriorate.

Go to any hobby/craft/scrapbooking store, they should carry it. It is usually used for old photographs to lay on in albums.

Put mine in a 'mylar' slip cover for 3-ring binders. Stationery (sp.) stores sell them.
