IrishJoker, where did you find that rack for your late 70's vette, I have a 79, wondering where I could pick one up...
My vette is an 81 -with some mods from the 76 through 79 installed on it - talking about pissing off an NCRS guy LOL - That luggage rack has only 4 - count em 4 posts -- everything you find out there has 6 or 8. This was a NOS rack I found on Ebay. Only one problem - that frame you see is my original - the rods are from the new rack. Once I went to install the Ebay NOS rack I discovered one minor flaw - not all the racks were drilled at the same location for the four connection points. I could have simply drilled the corrct holes in my new rack and put plastic plugs in the holes I didn't use. But the old rack was in perfect shape, only the rods had rusted. So I decided to safe the new rack for a later date and hopefully find replacement rods or buy a 6 or 8 hole and hope the rods are the same length.
Bottom line I saw two more 80/81 racks offered for sale on ebay - just keep an eye out for em.
Here's a thought you could use a 6 or 8 post rack and just not use the extra connection points, go to home depot - get some plastic plugs and plug up the unused support holes I would personally go with a 6 post rack - less holes to plug
I bought my LT-1 with a rack. Since stripping the paint (and being undecisive of the rack), I went ahead and removed it as I can always redrill the holes. In regards, to having trouble with the holes showing??? I dont think so. I cut 6 pieces of glass cloth 2 inches in diameter and laminated them under the holes. I then poured a small bit of resin in the holes and then added (cut to hole size, x 3 pic.) glass and laminated them within the holes untill full.
My '68 has one and I love it. Goes well with the chrome bumpers. None came from the factory; they were all installed at the dealer or after market. If you like it - go for it.
On my way to the beach to surf once I picked up some small fold up beach chairs that would only fit on the luggage rack. I secured them with bungy cords and it work really well. Of course my board had to ride over in my buddy's SUV. Still haven't figured out a way to pack that in the '71.

I passed on a 71 LT1, because it had a luggage rack. Luggage racks are for SUV's only. Just my observation, but 99+ percent of luggage racks are empty, on vettes I meet on the road. JMHO.
Mine came with a rack, first thing I did was remove it. But that is just my personal opinion, and in reality that's all you can go on. If you like them, have one, if you don't, then remove it. The holes will only come back and haunt you if you don't repair them 100% - I did mine over 5 years ago. Of course, I was planning a full resto/custom job anyway, so repairing a few little holes was no concern - taking one off an otherwise perfect car though, could be a different story.
