Default stereo behind seat?

i bought a mp3/cd stereo and installed it on my '72, but now have changed my mind and want to retain the apperance of the original am/fm. Now i'm looking for a spot to install the cd/mp3 and operate it with a remote. I tried the storage comp behind the driver seat, but the remote doesn't seem to work when the lid is closed. works fine otherwise. how about right behind the drivers seat, has anyone tried this? access not so important since the mp3 disc holds over 100 songs, so don't need to be changing the disc very often. only downside to behind the seat is that you can't put the seat in the rear-most position. what have others done??

I've seen many cars with the unit in the glove box and a wired remote that can be hidden under the dash or a remote sensor just below the glove box.

I put my cd changer in the storage behind the pass seat, works great, but I don't use a remote
