I need to replace the radio speakers in my '71 before radio arrives (orig. AM/FM stereo). Need advice on getting left dash panel clear to change the speaker. Also, is there any reason that I shouldn't use the kick panel openings (used for speakers in '68 & '69) for additional bass speakers? thx.
just changed the speakers on my 72, the top dash pad is held on by clips that it slides into you should just be able to pull on it (gently, and away from the windsheild) and it will slide out, you may need to take the screws out of the drivers side dash to loosen it, giving the top pad room to move, but you shouldnt need to take the drivers side out the whole way, i didnt anyway...hope that helps

hmm...that sounds too easy to be true.
is it really just a matter of 'sliding' the top dash panel out?
If so, I feel like doing it just to have a look under there!
Pulled the entire drivers dash side out, kinda' had to on the 71. Replaced bulbs, vacuum, speedo & tach lenses and the only real BEAR is getting the speedo & tach cables connected back up again. It's real tight in there.
I put 2 4x6's in the dash and another 2 4x6's in the kicks with a little modifications to the mounting plates, they both fit pretty well. I also put boxed 6x9's in the rear compartment. A CD/MP3 deck in the center console and I get lots of sound.

it was on mine, took all the screws out on the drivers side (passenger too, but that side is easy to pull off), then pulled the top off, the only thing i saw that interfered with it was on the plastic trim around the windshiled pillars on the inside...i think it is just sliding clips and the screws for the front dash panels holding it in...might be wrong though mine was missing nearly all of its interior screws, especially on the console
Dang!! I've been through my Corvette Assembly manual at least a hundred times....and never noticed that the top pad clips in place. When I read you guys info, I checked it out and..shur 'nuf...clips it is!! The top screws on each dash pad have to be removed first, as well as a screw in a bracket on the underside of the right side (just to the left of the speaker on the right side). Gonna pull it off tomorrow and do the speakers. Thanks, all.
