Tore off my dash a few days ago and was quite suprised and pissed off, found a good amount of rust. When I bought the vette I made sure to check out the frame and everything, but you cant really see this stuff without pullin everything apart. The frame is in great shape, just mild surface rust, nothing POR-15 cant handle.
^^This is the worst of it^^
Im not sure how the rust is around the windshild, I haven't been able to pull the trim off yet. I read somewhere to push down on the corner of the windshild with the T-tops off and see how much it flexed. I didn't want to push too hard for fear of breaking the windshild, but it didn't flex at all.
This is the day after I bought it...
She was originally Flame Orange, Repainted Yellow, then red, then this rough black in this pic. She is gonna go back to the Flame Orange
Ouch, What was it Clinton said. I feel your pain.
It does not look good at this point. Go ahead and take it apart and figure out what else is wrong. You will be ahead of the game in the long run. That way you can decide to repair or junk it.
I am not try to be rude but you will be better off in the long run knowing where you stand on this project.
you have to pull the windshield and check it. it will be rusted but don't be discouraged. mine was worse than that and i repaired it. it can be repaired don't give up. when done you will know what you have and that is a good feeling trust me
Im wanting to restore this one for sure, its my first sports car, and chevy for that matter. Right now Im making payments on the superduty you can see in the background of the bottom pic, so any real restoration is gonna be a bit down the road, but hopefully within a couple months I will be out of the military and working for a job I got lined up(making over 4x what I am now!).
If everything works out, within 6 months I will be starting a frame off resto. Got a hook-up at a body/paint shop and everything.
The thing that sealed the deal when I bought it was the engine, trans, frame and suspension. All of them are in awesome shape. For 4k I still think it was a pretty good deal. Matching #'s too.
I am not trying to discourage you or make you feel bad about your car.
You need to figure out how much of a problem you have before you sinck a lot of money in it. If you have the ability to repair this sort of thing you are a lot better off than a lot of other people who would need to pay to have someone repair it. You need to pull the windsheild to get an idea of how bad it is. I found some rust in mine and ended up cutting off the end of the fenders on both sides to repair mine. I was lucky and my frame was not that bad.
You also need to check the #3 bird cage area. It is a common problem.
Good luck with the repair and thanks for your service to our country.
Im a mechanic, so I can do almost all the work myself. Only thing I cant do right now is weld, but I have a bunch of friends that are very good at it and would be more than willing to teach me.
I wanted to check out the #3 birdcage area that your talking about, but it was raining like crazy today. Gonna check it out over the weekend

I'd recommend picking up the Lincoln HD100 Mig welder... I bought one at Home Depot about 3 weeks ago... comes with flux-core wire, plugs into any 120V outlet.... and does a SWEET job on anything up to 1/4" thick.... I bought mine for $350, and it's paid off about 50% of what I bought it for, already...
I highly recommend one. Plus, the wire is cheap enough, you can get LOTS of practice in, without breaking the bank...
