My Porter Cable 60 gal compressor decided to stop today. Checked the power and I'm getting power to the motor. That rules out pressure switch. The GE 7hp motor has a reset, but pushing it does nothing. Motor spins very easy, so it's not froze up. What do you think it could be? Maybe the starting capacitor?
Disconnect the capcitor and discharge it (put a screwdriver across the terminals) put your multi-meter on ohms Rx10000 and put the leads across the capacitor. Reverse the leads and the capacitor should charge needle swings to the right and then discharge needle comes slowly back to the left. If it does this it is o.k. if not capacitor is bad.

Good info, I will pull it out tomorrow night and give an update.

Both sides of the capcitor, start at -3.15 and run up to 13. then 1. on multimeter. I only had a 20K setting.
There is also another capcitor looking part on top of the motor. What is it?
You could have two capacitors one for start one for run is there a relay? To check the capacitor put one lead on each side of the capacitor then switch them.
Alright figured it out. Brought the capacitor to the Motor repair shop and it checked out. They guy at the counter told me that you just about have to stand on thermo protection switch to get it to reset, so tonight I push on it pretty hard and "click" it reset. Got to love that honcho de mexico stuff.
