The past week has been flooded with muffler and exhaust threads, if you haven't already checked. I am happy with my Allen's Stainless Exhaust system and highly recommend it for pipe quality, fit, and most important, the sound. He has different levels of sound to choose from and is on the internet. http://www.allencorvetteexhaustsystems.com/
Sound varies by manufacturer, so it's best to check one out in person at a show.

Below is the 4 muffler system I chose and a photo of a slight mod I did on a '75.

ahoover,

How much extra does the chambered tips quiet the system? Do the chambered tips change the sound at all? I'm thinking of getting the same system for theh 383 I'm building for my '68. I'm concerned that having only the primary chambers may be too loud for my liking. The engine will be running headers. Do you have any sound clips I could hear? Thanks.

I'll try to post a sound clip later this week with a db number. Personally, I recommend 2 mufflers per side. The sound with the above system is very close to original GM 2 1/2" C2 side exhaust.

The choice of headers or manifolds is personal prefference and based on your performance needs. Installing headers could bring new problems such as accessory mounting that you may not want to deal with. Front pipes may need to be fabricated to connect the exhaust to the headers. I would recommend long headers over short if they are in your budget, but save your manifolds for as long as you have the car. I full length Dynomax headers from Jegs (#289-85008) because they are slightly shorter than Hookers and there are no ground clearance issues.

Nope, the headers fit perfectly. I fabbed my own front pipes and I moved the joint that is usually under the trans mount forward so that the pipes can be separated easier in the future if I ever need to remove the exhaust. The rear clamp holds the exhaust to the hanger but the front clamp secures the pipe joint. Instead of one clamp doing both. The photo shown was taken during fittment so the most of the welding was not completed yet, just tacked.

I chose to go the LOUD route and stepped up to the Stainless Works chambered system for my '69 4-speed coupe (350/350hp small block).

Figured I couldn't afford the side pipes but wanted side pipe sound offered in chambered system. I have 2.5" duals, h-pipe and mufflers on the '80 so I wanted a different sound on the '69 (more of a raw power sound).

Put a chambered system from Ecklers on 2 years ago. I was skeptical about the fit when I ordered it and prepared for the worst. Entire system came to my door in a cardboard box right down to the clamps. Buddy of mine and I unbolted the old and slide on the new in under 3 hours! I don't think it could have been better! As for the sound, pure music to the ears.

I agree with PEPTO77. I ordered my chambered exhaust from MidAmerica. You obviously have to order the system for a 1974, but the crossmember is the same. Mine came to me in a cardboard box with all of the parts. It only took a couple of us a couple of hours to complete the whole project. I wanted the sidepipe sound without the sidepipe cost. It sounds great. I received numerous compliments and inquiries from fellow corvette clubbers.

On your '76, the local muffler place may not put a true dual exhaust on your car since it violates Federal law. Ask me how I know and how I got around it.

I had everything installed (MAD chambered) except for the pipes between the header collectors and chambered units. No one would fab and install the pipes, either local independent garages or chain shops.

So, I made up a template of the pipes, went to the local shop, and when asked what they were for, I said a '36 hot rod. They bent the pipes and after a couple of trips back to the shop for fine tuning, all was well. If I remember correctly, cost for bending the pipes was less than $20. I supplied the pipes, as they came with the MAD kit.
