I just spoke with someone named Paul at Corvette Tech in Pittsburgh, PA. This garage was refered to me by a local a/c shop. What a loser!
I asked if he would be interested in swapping out the heating & a/c control unit from a 80-82 vette into my car. I told him that I understood that this probably meant swapping out most of the entire system and would be quite a job. I then told him that money was no object and that I just wanted it to be done.
His response: I won't do it no matter how much you pay me. We only do factory original jobs here. He said it like I was a criminal.
I would have loved to have said: Have fun living in that trailer. How stupid of a businessman are you if you turn down big expensive jobs?
Some people just don't get it. If I want to see and all original car, I'll look in a book.

I got a big hammer...bring me the money and the Vette...I'll make it fit.....
I called Corvete Tech last fall when I was rebuilding my differential. I just wanted them to press out my old bearings and press in the new ones, then I'd set up the differential/backlash myself. They said that they won't just do the bearings, but he'd have to rebuild the entire diff and set it up himself - and I'd have the buy the parts from him too! Well, I already had all the parts I needed, and the price he wanted for this was something absolutely ridululous - I don't remember the number exactly. Needless to say that I didn't take my business to him, nor do I ever plan to take Corvette Tech any future business.
By the way - he's located in North Versailles (near Wal-Mart), just off Rt. 30.
I ended up taking the diff to a transmission shop down the street (that toys around in race cars on the weekends), and they gladly helped me out with my bearings.
Loser is more polite than I would have used for someone so full of his own importance, but the moderator might be upset if I say what I would call him
Seriously though, who the hell is he to say what should or should not be done to your car. I doubt he'll be around for long with that attitude. Specialists in the UK, some good and some bad, will only offer advice about what is a good idea or not, which is fine. But if you want it done, they'll do it, unless of course it's actually dangerous.
Corvette enthusiasts talk about this sort of thing, as we are now, and word of mouth will be punishing for him.

Many shops do not want to do mods since that requires thought!
What you are wanting to do should be so easy that some shops could do it!
Just do a topic on it.
I think it is better he tells you he can’t, wont do the job before you leave the car with him and it sits weeks before you get mad and take it out owing storage charges.
Nothing better than finding a good mechanic/friend with a shop. When I get stuck or need "professional assistance!", I have a friend who is the manager of a local tire and brake shop. He also owns a 68, a 75 and a 78. So I trust him and he gives me great prices!
I have met many paint shop owners that will not paint if they do not get the body work. I can understand this because their reputation is on the line. but still if I take my car in and I have the cash they should paint.

Hmmm. There is no way I would ever criticize a business owner who turned away work. My grandfather owned a body shop until he retired, and I worked there many a summer. If his shop did not do the body-work on the car, he refused to paint it and he couldn't care less what the car owner thought about it. Note I did not say customer, I said car owner. Having change in your pocket doesn't make you a customer until the seller agrees to accept your money. I personally believe to this day that this standard is a big part of the reason he was so successful. He pissed off a few people, but by and large those people didn't matter because at the end of the day, his work spoke volumes more than the John and Jane Doe's who couldn't get a $99 paint job from him.
I would not rule out a well respected hot rod shop for this conversion. To often we think only a corvette shop can work on our cars, but there are probably some quality resto shops that specialize in modifications and are more creative.
In this specific case, he could have been more friendly and stated that he specializes in factory original work. Even better he could have offered a recommendation on another shop that would be willing to help. A good rule of thumb is to treat all customers or prospective customers with courtesy and respect.
