Default Question For Frame Experts

I currently have a 79 that is stripped to the bare frame. I got to the point of painting the whole frame with Rust Bullet and Chassis Black when my son came across a 72 for sale. The 72 is going to need at least as much work on the frame as the 79 and I'm wondering if the 79 frame can be used with the 72 body. I'm thinking that it can't based on pictures that I've seen of the rear of 72 frames, but if someone has done this swap successfully I'd like to hear the details.

Also, if anyone knows of a clean 72 frame for sale I'd like to hear about it. Thanks.

Rick
i can't answer your question for you to say yes or no, but on my website, in the tech articles section, i have the frame specs for both the '72 and the '79 models. Looking at them the measurments are different.

my tech articles page is here:
http://69.253.166.197/page1/page65/page65.html

towards the top of the listing you will see a file for the '69-'72 frames and than another file for the '78-'82 frames.
click on the name of the file to open them up or right-click on the file to download them to your own computer.

hope this helps you some

a little welding can solve that problem.

Barry,

Thanks for posting that link. That's exactly the information I need.

I don't think I want to cut and weld the 79 frame for a couple of reasons. If I could use the 79 frame as is, I could just continue building it back up into a rolling chassis and drop the 72 body and engine onto it. The 72 frame could then be restored or replaced at a later time. If I modify the frame, the 79 will have no useable frame and I'll still have a 72 frame in need of restoration.

I'm leaning toward trying to sell the 79 as a (mostly) complete project car and put the money I get from it into a new frame for the 72. I don't have the garage space for 2 Vettes, unfortunately.
