So I think I have this problem whipped and I start out again this morning to go get gas (incidentally, I did put 5 Gals in it last night just to get it back to about 3/8 of a tank) and I don't even make it 100 yrds from my damn driveway, and she starts the same **** again. Turn her around and get her back to the house and into the garage. I figure I've checked EVERYTHING else, so I start yanking the carb (the Lars carb mind you) to put the Jet Performance stage 2 QJet that I had on there, back on. I get about halfway into this and I happen to look down the right side of the motor near the starter, and lo and behold what do I see?? One of the small red wires coming off the starter (pretty sure it's the same red one that goes into the "batt" terminal on the coil) is touching the inside of the header and I look closer and sure enough the plastic coating on the wire is completely melted away and the bare wire is touching the header!
Soooo.....as soon as the b!tch cools off, I'll be replacing that wire and figuring a way to make sure it doesn't happen again. It's COMPLETELY UN to have a car like this that runs like a$$!! I hope I got it finally!!
Fixed the melted wire....still a "NO GO"....doin' the same thing....wtf...I'm almost at a loss. I guess I'll pull the brand new module that I put in yesterday and take it and have it tested to see if it's bad....I guess its possible that the shorted out wire may have f**ked up the new module too....damn this is getting OLD!!
Pulled the module, had it tested; tested OK. Bought a new coil just for ***** and giggles and put it all back together...it's a little better but still has the hesitation above 3000 RPMs under a load. I dunno, I guess I'm gonna put the Jet Performance Stage 2 QJet back on tomorrow and see if that makes a difference. Either that or figure out how to do a more extensive test on the mechanical fuel pump. I disconnected the fuel line at the carb yesterday, stuck it in a can, and cranked it over and got a good steady stream of gas, but I have no idea what the actual "pressure" or volume is when the cars at different RPMs. Any ideas?? I am exhausted with this damn car right now....I have worked on it ALL weekend...a damn nice weekend too. Would have much rather been out cruisin'.
After completely checking/replacing ignition components, I decided (as per Lars recommendation) to check a few things on the "fuel delivery" side of it. So, I dropped the gas tank (was pretty easy because I have sidepipes and no spare tire carrier). First thing that I learned is that when my gas guage says 3/8 of a tank, I have 10.5 gallons in that baby. Anyway, here's what I found and I think where my problem was; the short length of hose that connects the gas tank to the hard lines that run along the frame rail was badly deteriorated and had a hole in it! I think this was causing the mechanical fuel pump to suck air like crazy, especially at higher RPMs. I replaced ALL the hoses (supply, return, and vent). I suspect that sucking so much air like this may have been causing pre-mature failure of the fuel pump as well. So tonight I'm gonna install a new pump that I just got from NAPA and give it a go....again. If I don't make another entry on this thread you guys will know that it's FIXED! Oh, btw, the inside of my tank and the "sock" were amazingly clean!
