Hi everyone. I hang out in the C5 section a lot, but read most all the forums as I love all Corvettes. I have a friend with a 67 who has a problem and I thought I'd try to see what any of you thought. His car runs fine, starts fine, except when he parks it there is a small drip of gas. Not a lot, and not when the car is running. Its coming from the back area, and like I said not a lot. Just when he shuts it down. Any ideas of what it could be or the cost of repairing? Thanks for any help you can give.
If he can get under it,the leak should be easy to find..must trace out all rubber fuel hoses...if from fuel tank,it might be more difficult..but check all hoses first...drive it up on ramps..
Sorry about that. Need coffee! Its leaking in backarea of the car, near the exhaust. It definantly needs fixed asap, he's worried its going to be real expensive to fix. It doesn't sound like a major repair to me, but I thought I;d ask for some advice. Thanks again.
Which SIDE of the back? Driver's side? Passenger's side? Overflow tube? Rusty tank? How full is the tank? Does how full the tank is make a difference in the leak? etc. More info please.
It is either the rubber lines or his tank is rusting out and has a small pin hole in it. Not to uncommon in older cars. Have him remove the spare tire carrier and have a good look up there and you should be able to find the damp spot. Trace it from there. Rubber lines are quite easy the tank is a little more difficult but not bad at all to replace.
Thanks, When I talk to him later I;ll get more inf. He called me and was worried sick, so I thought I would get some help from you guys, which I did. Thanks again, and sory I didn't help the cause with incomplete info.
Worst case the tank is rusted out. If he's lucky it's a hose. Removing the tank is not a big deal. It is dropped out the bottom. If I'm counting right there are 6 bolts holding it (2 for the straps, 4 for the crossbar). He will have to remove the spare tire carrier & probably the mufflers first.
Of course no matter what the hoses should be replaced even if they are not leaking (yet). Also get a new filler neck gasket or he may find a leak when the tank is full.

It may or may not be expensive or difficult to fix, but I can guarantee that it will be both expensive AND difficult to fix when it catches on fire
Just like a bad brake situation, it's one of those things that just HAS to be fixed, and now.
