Default Jack Stands

When putting a Vette on floor stands, where is the best place to jack the the car up and where would you put the stands to best secure the car, so not to damage it or have the car to fall?

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure they're covered in the owner's manual and factory service manual. You'll definately want the service manual if you're crawling under there.

One thing to keep in mind is changes you are planning on doing. I had my '68 convertible with 4 jackstands in the positions shown on the chart above until a week ago.

I have been rebuilding the front and rear suspension/brakes and steering. Everything was fine when I worked on the front (the car never moved off the four stands). BUT, after I removed the rear end (everything but the diff), I put my hand under the rear driver side wheel well to brace myself to get something out of reach and lifted the car off the rear jack stands. Talk about getting the S*** scared out of you.

I immediately took two smaller stands (3 ton) and put them directly under the engine. Those two aren't carrying any weight, but they are solidly against the frame to keep it from shifting. Something to keep in mind depending on what you are going to do.

Good luck.

That might be why the factory diagram shows putting jack stands under the very front of the frame. I don't like the engine hanging out there like that unless the rear tires are on the ground, which angles the body toward the rear.
