Default motor removal checklist

I'm hoping my friend who has an engine hoist will be able to make it over this weekend to help me pull the motor from the '78.

I want to make sure everything is ready when he gets here and i've never pulled an engine before so can you check my list and make sure i'm not missing anything?

hood, rad core support, radiator, and fan shroud are already off
fanblade, WP pulley are already off
PS pump is already unbolted
AC is already disconnected and off
AIR pump is already off
all wires are disconnected
carb and intake are already off
exhaust manifolds are still on but disconnected from the exhaust pipe

over the next two days I'll be:
unbolting the tranny and lossening the torque converter (3 bolts)
disconnecting the starter wires and removing the starter (does the starter need to get removed or just disconnected)?
removing the motor mount bolts
removing any ground straps

am I missing anything here?

Thanks.

Sounds like you've done the worst of it. I would get the starter disconnected and out of there. Like always, make note of the connections. Make sure you support the front of the tranny before you take the engine out. You may want to replace the front seal on the tranny while you have the engine out too.

ahh, thanks. I knew I was going to have to get a small floor jack to support the tranny but I forgot about that so i better run over to Sears today.

cool, I'll remove the starter as well. I wasn't sure if it really needed to come off or not

oh, ok...........here a question. sorry if it's a stupid one.

do i need to drain the engine oil and the tranny oil first before disconnecting the two?? I'm thinking the engine shouldn't need to get drained but i'm not sure about the tranny.

I just used some wood blocks under the front of the tranny but a jack would be nice as long as it doesn't settle, like all of mine do.

Draining the engine oil would be a good idea but the tranny will be fine. There aren't any fluids between the two.

thanks.
The last thing I wanted was to undo the tranny and have tranny fluid pouring out. I didn't think it would since I knew the fluids don't mix or go from one side to the other, but I always figure it's safer to ask first.

Barry,
Make sure the engine hoist has a really...I mean really long boom otherwise you may have to take the engine out from the side. YOu may also have to remove one of the front wheels to get the hoist in close if the boom isnt long enough.

Hi Stewart
long time no talk. How's that dog doing?

with the room I have to work with in my garage I'm going to have no choice but to pull the motor from the side anyway and already figured the front wheel on that side will probably have to come off while we do it.

Remove the distributor, didn't see that in the list.
When you tilt the motor/tranny assy to get it clear the tranny juice WILL run out the back of the tail stock, put the yoke in there and secure it with a wire.

yep, i didn't mention the distributor but since that was required to take out to get the intake out i assumed it was understood.........

i'm not removing the tranny, just the motor so I shouldn't have to undo the yoke in the back, just the front bolts mounting it to the motor and than the 3 bolts to loosen and push back the torque converter I would think.

I've found that high grade dark chocolate can be a good substitute! Love your Border Collie. One of our dogs is a Border Collie Mix and she's the original trouble magnet. But a great dog.
