Default title woes

I was wondering: Is it legal to have my 1982 C3 re-vinned if I were to buy just a clear title from a "project" 81-82 Covette??? How often is that done?

How can I make sure the title I buy is good? (and not salvage, etc.)

As some of you may know, I bought my first Corvette a couple days ago. The previous owner never bothered to get the title from the previous previous guy who owned it and now I'm stuck... not sure what to do...

What should be the first steps??

Thanks,
Igor

If I were you I would demand my money back or threaten to call the police. The seller must know that you can't register the vehicle without a title so the car is worthless as a driver without the title. If he concealed the fact that there was no title that is further grounds for demanding your money back.

I hope you learned that you always examine the title before turning over the money.

Good luck.

Dude, why would you lay out money and NOT get the title? You can try one of two things: A: Find the guy who has the title and have him transfer it to you. B: Make the guy you bought it from go to the guy he bought it from and transfer the title.
I hope you got a bill of sale when you transfered money!

I think it's legal as long as you don't get caught...

You might need a bill of sale from the register owner. About 10 years ago I bought a car without the title/pink slip (the guy could not find it) all I had to do is fill some form at the DMV and have the previuos owner sing a bill of sale. Is the bill of sale from the guy you bought it from or the register owner? I don't know how it works in your state, but I would go to your local DMV and find out what you can do.

If you go to TxDot they can print you a new title while you wait.
I believe all you will need is the Bill of Sale Vin number and photo ID.

Don't re-VIN a car to avoid hunting down a lost title. There is too much at stake. Have the seller do the right thing and get it. If it has a lien, get your money back or get it cleared. I repeat, do not re-VIN this car, it will come back to bite you.
