I want to go with a set of Flowmaster DF50 mufflers for my 68 327/350. I want to put in a new 2 1/2 inch exhaust system wit hthe new mufflers. My question is, what style of mufflers do I need? I guess what I'm trying to say is, what configuration should I order? I'm not sure what works with our vettes.
I don't know what model flowmasters i have on my '72, but they're similar in dimensions to the stock mufflers, don't forget to have an "H" pipe installed.
I think the answer to the question that I think you are asking is.............. What I mean is, not sure what your question is, nor am I sure of the answer... but... (got that?)
I think the original mufflers had an offset inlet and a center outlet, but a skilled exhaust guy can make other configurations fit nicely.
I went to custom exhaust shop near my house and the owner did a great job of making a custom fitted inlet pipe so that muffler was tucked up nicely between the spare tire and the inside fender.
Gottcha. Thanks! Is there really that much of a difference between the 40's and the 50's?
I talked to a lot of people, including the tech support folks at Flowmaster, and everyone said the 40's will be louder and higher pitched. The 40's may create too much interior noise, but it's all a matter of personal taste.
The 50's have a deeper, throaty sound. They are not "poppy". There is a resonance in the interior at ~1500-1700 RPM, but it's not annoying. I usually only hear it as I'm pulling away in 1st gear.
If you look through the online Flowmaster catalog you'll notice that the 50's are more commonly applied to C3 Vettes than the 40's.
But I'm sure you'll find a lot of folks who love the 40's too. Depends what kind of sound and volume you're looking for.
Well, if you think you have to have muflers, get the 40's. Thats what I have but I'm thinking of removing them and going with straight pipes out the back. Should not be as loud as sidepipes.
I have the 50s on mine and they sound great. I was advised against the 40s and never regretted it. They are a tight fit but if done right they look and sound great.

Gordon, you were one of the guys who steered me to the 50's. Thanks!
You should consider the new Super 40's, they make the most hp and are more free flowing than the other Flowmasters. I have them on my car, and they sound awesome. Very deep with none of the interior resonance that the regular 40's have. This link is to the mufflers, not the specific model you need:

Great advice! I went to a local custom exhaust installer (30 years in the business) and he directed me to the Super 40's. He said they're easier to fit and have just the sound I'm looking for. I'll let you know how the install goes on Wednesday
