Hi, my friend and I are working up a tach drive HEI for his largly stock L-82 350 in a 73 coupe Our question is has anybody done this and are there any wiring setups that work best. We know the ballast resister and coil will no longer be nessessary. Wiring suggestions? Thanks, Joe and Ron

Pretty simple really - only one wire with a tach drive - right ??
Perhaps the "tach" terminal is there also - for electronic tach use.
I would recommend a heavy guage wire - like 10 or 12 guage stranded copper.
Ideally, you want to run that all the way back to the fuse panel
and solder it in.
That could be a lot of work. Alternatively, you could install
a relay (same kind use for most auto applications) to supply
power. In this case, I would run the power from the alternator
or starter terminal, put the relay in series, and control the relay
with the wire that was providing power to the coil.

OK - I made it more complicated than it had to be.
Simply connecting the coil power to the distributor would
probably work fine 99% of the time.

To get sufficient power to the distributor, you'll need to tap into the pink wire from the ignition switch. This is the factory power point for HEI's. Your existing coil wires are resistance wires and will fail within a short time. MAD Enterprises has a wiring kit for about $19 that includes both connectors and the correct wire. You can eliminate the wire going to your starter solenoid as well.

On my 74 I found a start hot\switch on hot plug in the center of the fuse box. It had a pig tail already attached, all I had to do was connect to it and run the wire through the firewall.
