Many years ago I read an article in Popular Mechanics that showed you how to add a water vapor injection system to your car. I had an old 6 cylinder AMC Hornet at the time and I followed the instructions and installed the water injection system on it. The car ran noticeably cooler and got about 18% better gas mileage, as well as changing the dirty exhaust pipe from black to soft gray. The only drawback was in the winter I would have to disable the system (the water would freeze) and readjust my carburetor mixture screws.
Now my question to all of you engineer and performance types - What are the pro's and con's of such a system. Is there a detrimental side to making "steam" power?
The one from Popular Mechanics I made from a wine bottle with a rubber cork, some fish tank filter hoses, a metering valve and a fish tank aerator stone. Just what I want everyone to see under the hood of my Vette - NOT!
So this can be beneficial for our high performance engines?
That is too cool!
How much $$$$ for a professional set up like the one you mentioned above? Was it worth it?
