Before I get a bigger hammer, I was wondering if anybody has experience with removing this flapper in the interior heater box on the end that is located in the middle of the car. It looks like the flapper just pushes on the shaft and might tap off (gently). I have some fibreglass repairs to do so I'm doing a full overhaul on the box. Thanks.
Just went thru the same thing. My vaccuum actuator on the left side failed. Had to disconnect it from the flapper while using a mirror and plied the retainer off the end of the shaft. No problem. Slips back on. You may have to compress the tabs a little on the retainer.
Thanks for the info, but I am removing the entire vent plate from the shaft.
I managed to get the vent plate off the shaft tonight using a harmonic balancer puller, and 14 ga electrical wire instead of the puller's side bolts. I wrapped the wire underneath the flapper, next to the shaft, and attached it to the puller. A pin punch finished off the job.
