I think the trans am used a pontiac block.
The 400 small block was used in blazers, pickups and large chevrolet cars. I think it was some where around the late 60's to the mid 70's.

What cars were originally equipped with the 400 block that so many of the CF C3 members are using? (406 after .30 over) Didn't the first gen Trans Ams use that 400 block?
MY1970-1980 large Chevy cars & Light-Medium Chevy/GMC trucks ... also, both Dart & World market very good, new aftermarket sbc 400 block starting about $1600. The pontiac 400 is an entirely different animal. I have 2 or 3 GM sbc 400 available ... email me if you're serious ... probably ain't cheap to freight a block to SoCal from SC.

Call'm boats. Big 4 door sedans mostly and stationwagons.
The 400's went into the family sedans, P.U. trucks, Vans (work trucks), Blazers and i think some Laguna Chevelles. No Vettes or Camaros. So most blocks in those cars saw little abuse and may have acceptable cranks for a street warrior. But the work trucks???
I still find them (Chevy 400's) in the pick-a-part boneyards - a few in each yard. torqvette let me know if your looking for a junkyard piece down here in the LA basin - send a PM and i'll see what i can do to help. Ecology only wants $200 for a pull your own - and i think gives a small warrenty too. That's a used 400" sb on my list for my next eng too.
Had a 400 Pontiac in my GTO and a great motor. Back when GM cars had some identity and the different car lines had they're own engineering and engines that gave them appeal instead of the corporate clones - but now look at GM's situation. Long rods and BB vlvs made 400hp with just a good cam up grade to the mtr - using stock Poncho heads and crank. Spin the tires just by stomping on it at 5mph. Still find a few Ponty 400's, 455's and even a 426 in the boneyards here. Not much work to swap for a Chevy eng as the old Firebird motor mounts allow it. Pontiac used a different bellhousing though. But the 455 Ponty was just a stroked 400 and make some brutal torque. If u want a torque monster vette for the price of a rebuild kit a 455 swap would be fun.
