Default Clicking in rear--help!

Had the '81 since Jan. '06 and have had no problems except the starter. Unfortuantely, the last time I had it out I heard some clicking in the rear as I gave it the gas. It doesn't have a certain RPM or MPH that it consistently clicks at, but just comes and goes as it pleases. I can tell that it clicks per revolution of the axle when it does click though.

Can anyone give me a diagnosis? I've not done anything to the car since I bought it, except for the starter. It has 95,500 mi. One friend who's got an '90 ZR1 said that it's probably my posi-track, and changing the rearend to synthetic fluid would solve the issue. What do you guys think?

When was the last time the rear end was serviced? I would start there. Is the differential "wet" - I would make sure you have the right fluid in there, including the proper GM posi fluid - two bottles plus the standard gear oil. Check your seals - make sure they are not leaking. Sometimes the clutches back there get all dry and bound up due to lack of service.

I have to ask though - Are you sure the sound comes from the differential and not one of the wheels? The reason I ask is that the other potential is that the springs and/or clips that keep your emergency brake shoes aligned on one or both of the wheels have wore out or come loose. This would cause the brake shoes to to flop around in there rubbing against the inside of the rotor as is spins.

Finally, the other option could be worn U-Joints - or bearings but I would expect more of a grinding or clunking noise I think. Other than what I mentioned here I can't think of anything else it could be. I am sure some others will chime in as well.

Good Luck!!

When I said the noise was from the rear, I meant the rear of the car, not specifically the differential. So, please give me all possibilities!

It could also be clutches. try going in tight circles in a parking lot both directions and see if problem persists. U joints could be gone in either 1/2 shafts or main driveshaft(get under car and check for movement. good luck

Thanks for the tips fellas.

I've got under it to check for play in the 1/2 shafts, but they didn't seem very loose, so I was thinking that it was not the u-joints, but I could be wrong. On the left side I rolled the tire back and forth while in park, and I could feel some knocking through the tire, but it didn't seem to be there on the right. Could this be a symptom as well?
