Default Where does this part go?

http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?p...dept%5Fid=1874

I've been told this is what I need to make the speedo on my '79 L82respond but I can't seem to find out where it goes from any of my manuals. I expected it to be a lot smaller than it is and thought it went behind the set screw next to where the speedo cable enters the side of the TH350. I don't see how something this size could fit in that area (ie next to the governor cover.

Thoughts? Pix?

Thanks,
Steve

You should try making friends with the parts guy at the local Chevy dealership, most of that stuff is still available and if you get the right person they will definately be glad to help you get the right parts,,,the first time. Good luck,,, Peace,,, Moosie

That is the driven gear on the transmission speedometer cable outlet. You unscrew the speedo cable at the transmission, then remove a clip, and the holder and that gear pull out together. You may have to twist the holder a bit to get it to come out.

That's what I thought but the part I bought seems way bigger than any opening I'd be able to make after removing the cable. I'll dissect it and check. Thanks

As for testing the speedo itself, I intend to attach it to a drill and run it counterclockwise to see if it registers. Is the speedo electronic or should I expect it to register if the car is off and the battery is disconnected?

Not sure about the '79, but the counterclock wise drill worked on my '76, it's mechanical, no need for key to be on.

While you are at it replace the o ring on the speedo housing and the race seal also . This area is a common leak zone, the symptoms look like you need a new pan gasket..
