...That's for '71 and earlier Vettes with Astro Ventilation, fibre optics and manual trans........it might be for a 68-69 because the area between the shifter pattern and shifter is chrome on my '71........
...and to answer your question, the slots are for the Astro ventilation.....basically levers with ***** that open and close the interior fresh air vents........
We have a 75 that we had converted from an auto to a 4-speed manual. The trans came from a 69, M-21. The panel came with it, but it doesn't have the LCD light on the bottom. I don't know if it came from the 69.
Can anyone tell me how the vents work? How are they connected and to what? I'd like to see if I can get them working.
Otherwise, does anyone have a 4-speed panel for a 75 w/o a/c that they might want to trade?

The vents are cable operated. There is a vent in either side kick panel. when you pull the lever toward you it opens the vent.
The reason I know that is a 70 or 71 plate is because the fiber optics were in a different location in the 68-69 plates. They were under the engine spec plate. Also 71 was the last year for fiber optics.

68 UP TO 72 FOR SURE definately vent controls astro veltillation as stated above operated by cable ... the one in the pic is for a 69 to 72 since the 68 does not have the engine id plate at the bottom, and it does have the fiber optics which ended in 72

I use the pic just to show the slits (found it on Zip's website). Our plate does not have the fiber optics, so I'm guessing it may be off of a 69 - maybe.

beg to differ my friend... you could get the optics in early 72 not sure what month it was phased out exactly exactly but there were there part year at least

I did not know that, I have a march build date 72 and no fiber optics. I have also never seen any fiber optics in any 72 and all the GM tech manuals and books I have read on the bumper years say the fiber optics ended in 71. Learn something new everyday!
Anyone have a 72 with fiber optics or have ever seen one? Now that is a rare car.

gotta figure it was and early year carry over, like the steerign wheel in a 68 is from the 67. also there ar multiple instances of part year runs on things in these cars
steerign damper
wiper overide indicator
the list goes on
who knows. the one thing people forget is that 35 + years ago manufacturing was not the exact science it is today. still just guys building cars. When you put it in that light its easy to see how these kinds of things happen
Your looking at a late 69 thru 71 Console plate. Early 69's had the two lower attaching holes in the extreme corners as opposed to being along side the optics The optics were remove in 72. The slots were for the air vent controls and were for non air cars
