Own a 77 coupe. Live in California. (Smog laws here suck !)
Anyway, was just wondering, when will my car be exempt from smog ?
is it that the car has to be 1975 and older to be exempt ? or is it that the car must be 30 years old ?
in which case I just have to smog my car for 2 years more ?
No more rolling smog exemption in Calif. If your car is '76 or newer, you'll need smog...always.
However, some members have applied for "historic" plates, which require the car to be 25 (?) yrs. or older. Unfortunately, historic plates limit your ability to drive the car daily. You might slip under the radar from the police, but if you are involved in an accident, your insurance may not pay if the car was being operated outside of its' coverage.
No vehicle built under federal (or Kalifornia) smog laws will ever be 'exempt' from the requirements for the year of manufacture. Whether or not anyone checks on older vehicles...that's a state-by-state thing.
