My corvette center mechanic told me that one of the studs might have snapped and because of the strain on the remaining studs and lugs, they might have started popping off one after another ... Actually, the repairs are done, I got to pick it up today evening. He replaced 4 out of 5 studs on the wheel. Damage was about $120 with labor
80%-90% of your $120 was labor. Your mechanic's own logic was telling him to replace all 5 while he was in there ... why didn't he? Do yourself a favor ... find a competent wrench ... and ... pull all 20 lugnuts & put a dab of real anti-seize lube on each of the 20 studs & re-torque. Did a muffler shop recently remove rear wheels to work on exhaust?

you're right jack.
studs cost just $5 a piece.
I guess it's my fault for buying the impact wrench and for being so over zealous with it.
and the stud failure is why I always tighten by hand and never with an impact.
I had an 83 chevy 4x4 when I was growing up - big tires - big lift kit
had both front tires shed 3 of the 5 lugs & studs on each side. We determined that it was from over tightening with an impact and then the tires were slightly out of balance because they were mud tires. They started popping like popcorn and the whole front end was shaking violently. Pulled over and had to be towed home. It was scary - kind of like the time I broke an axel.
Question to all:
Is this something that could result from over-torquing with an impact wrench???
yes, I over torgued the studs on my DD and they "stretched" and I had to replaced them. When I pulled the studs out you could see where they "necked down"..
