im looking at a 79 it has thin cracks about 6 to8 inches long on the top ridge along both front fenders . is this a usual problem ? are they stress cracks or a bad paint job . they dont seem any deeper than the paint and about as wide as pencil line
Yes, they are stress cracks. They form at the seam where the fenders join and over the years, as the filler dries and deteriorates, the seam separates and cracks. This is a common problem. The fix for this is to grind out all the seams (all 4 fenders since they probably will all need it), fill the seam with 3 layers of fiberglass mat and epoxy resin, sand smooth and repaint. Anything less than this and the cracks will reappear(ask me how I know ) Other common areas for cracks are at the nose especially around the headlamp openings and the front where the bumper attaches. All these areas can be fixed the same way but you will be looking at a repaint which is expensive. Sorry about the bad news.
