Default 1982 Exhaust Question

Hi everyone, I just bought a 1982 Corvette last week and one of the first things that needs to be replaced are the mufflers. I figure while I'm at it I'll replace the catalytic converter as well. However I'm having a problem in that I'm getting different information on what parts I need depending on where I look.

A have just a couple of questions I'm hoping someone can help me with:

1) I see a lot of 2.25" parts being available, but I thought on the 82 everything is 2.5" - can someone clear it up?

2) If I'm changing the mufflers and the converter is it worth going ahead and getting new pipes as well? The ones I have appear to be in OK shape.

3) Muffler recommendations - I know this is purely a person preference but I'm looking for something that is very deep but at the same time not loud. I do a lot of driving very late at night or in the early morning and I would like not to wake up the neighbors every time I turn my car on or drive by there house. I was looking at the Flowmaster 50's - but is there anything else that people can recommend?

4) Muffler offsets... From what I can tell the mufflers should be offset/offset - however once again I get a lot of conflicting information about this since people like Flowmaster recommend offset/center - will that configuration fit OK or will I need to do any mods?

Hopefully my questions are not too stupid. I actually did some research on this first posting but I couldn't find anything definitive which is why I decided to post my questions here.

Thank you.
Chris

Look in the catalogs like Ecklers, Zip, Mid America for direct fit mufflers and exhaust pipes. I have a set of Monza type mufflers with a test pipe and the sound is nice.

82 is 2.5 inch from what Im aware of.

You can find true dual kits (no cat) which are supposed to add some grunt and sound very nice.

There are some options (though not as much as C5s )

If you decide to replace only the cat and mufflers be sure to check the rear Y-pipe. Mine was all pitted with small pin holes that I couldn't see until it came out.

Congrats on your new Vette. My exhaust is 2.5". I replaced the cat with a high flow direct-fit unit. The pipes are stock but the mufflers are Cherry Bomb Turbos made to fit the Vette. They have a nice deep sound. The stock collectors are actually 2.25" where they bolt into the headers and then increase to 2.5". I'm guessing that GM did that to restrict flow in order to improve exhaust emissions. Good luck with your new ride!
