Hi,
Cars in MA can get antique plates when they are 25 years old. Is the age of the car determined by the first day of the calendar year? I can't wait to get rid of my regular plates and the expensive regular car insurance.
Thanks,
Tom
so your '82 should be OK in 2007. Most states put a fair amount of restrictions on antique plates but will also vary on how much the police enforce it. I think MA allows original year of mfg plates as well, which would be great for your '82 (you could use an original '82 MA plate instead of something that says "antique" on it). I found a link to your states MV info that should have the details you're looking for ...
That's how it is in VA. On 1/1/07, you could register any 82 as an antique. VA, however has the option of just using an antique plate, but still being able to use the car as your primary transportation, therefore it still has to go through state inspection and you have to renew the plates every year, or you could register it as an antique where you are limited in it's use, but it doesn't have to go through state inspection.
I'm pretty sure 82 was just the plain old red letter on white plates ... no date stamped.
Maybe they were green by then ... forget.
69 ... maybe stamped.
Well - no - looks like 69 was not a dated plate ... blue letters on white.
I'm also fairly sure you can get collectors car insurance with regular plates.
The insurance is the limiting factor here. They won't cover you if
driving outside of their guidelines.
I won't be giving up my vanity plate for a "70" and restricted driving rights.
