I don't remember exactly how much it took to refill after a complete rebuild, but I do remember it was surprisingly little. It is also very easy to overfill, as you found out. What I did was fill the pump up to the top, then started the engine and let it circulate through the hoses and ram. I then let it settle for an hour or so and then carefully topped it off. I don't think it was more than a quart for the whole system.
I used a turkey baster and sucked out the appropriate amount. Rechecked it a few times and poured the excess back in the bottle.
Yeah, I was surprised how little it took to fill. Although I cant swear the resovoir was completely dry. I just know it wasnt registering anything on the dipstick.
