Default Slick 50

I was just wondering what everyone thinks about using oil additives like Slick 50 (http://www.slick50.com). I was thinking about putting some of that High Milage stuff into my 82 Vette (74,000 miles). However, like with any additives, I am nervous and would like to check with you guys first before I mess things up. Thanks.

On the same note, is it safe to use carb/injector cleaner fluid to treat your gas?

Under no circumstances would I ever use a product like Slick50. A Google search should turn up everything you need to know about this.

What are you hoping to accomplish with the carb/injector cleaner in the fuel tank?

Be well,

Snake oil....IMO....got 128,000 on the 78 SA....once a year,I run a quart of Rislone thru just to get an edge on sludge build up....then drain and add new oil/filter...no good subsitute for frequent oil/filter changes...don't use any fuel additives,either...but clean carb occasionally...

I've used it twice, the first time about 15 years ago in a *cough* Honda ... engine had >100000 miles when I sold the car and it was still in great shape.
I put a bottle in my Z28, roughly 4 years ago (found it on sale at K-Mart) and drove 60000 miles since then.... no problems.....
I can't say anything negative about Slick50 but I also can't say for sure if it really helps - use good oil and change it every 3-4K miles, that's probably all the engine really needs.
from my experience it doesn't mess anything up....

I was more thinking about fuel additives that clean your carb/injector . I have a cross fire fuel injection and the engine is running a little rough, so I thought to treat the fuel with one of those cleaners. I am still in the learning phase (1 month owner) and don't really feel comfortable to clean the TBI myself with another method but I'll get there.

Thanks for your input everyone.

If you have dirty injectors, you might want to try a bottle of Red Line Complete Fuel System Cleaner in each of the next three consecutive tanks of fuel. If that doesn't clear up the problem, a more aggressive cleaning, or replacement of the injector(s) may be necessary.

i have never used slick 50 but always used t-plus in my higher mileage cars which is basically the same thing.
i can tell you that my wife hit a hunk of metal on rt295 here in NJ and
holed the oil pan, she drove the car about 25 miles with it like that and ended up with about 1 qt of oil left in it.
engine never seized up but the babbit on the bearings had to be gone as the car didnt have oil pressure at an idle after that.

to clean the injectors try a product called seafoam it was originally made for the marine industry and pretty much
does it all. been using it in all my vehicles for about 3 years now.

if you have a lot of sludge build up or want to prevent it.

i change oil and filter and add 4 qts oil and 1/2 qt ford type f ATF run for about 100 miles and change again.
have used this method for 10 years + without problems. the ford type f has the highest detergent.

Kind of funny. I did the Google search out of curiosity. I found th following articles:

http://skepdic.com/comments/slickcom.html

Bottom line; I still don't know if it works or not.

IMO, I avoid anything that has teflon in it, which I believe Slick 50 has.

Check out a used teflon cooking pan...where did all those little teflon flakes go?

In a car, right through your oiling system.

If it really worked, it would already be in our motor oil. I've used it about 15 years ago, and saw no benefit.

From what I have read in the past, the stuff is a solid floating around in the oil. You have to figure it will clog up your filter first. Second, I have heard as the moving parts fling this stuff around it accumulates as sludge inside the engine.

I wouldn't risk it. Change the oil more often !

JMO as I did not stay at a holiday inn express last night.

Stay away from products that make grandiose promises. (Slick 50)
As regards carb/injector cleaner: I have used the real Techron stuff in the black bottle once or twice a year in my Benz only because I read in the BMW magazine and in the Mercedes Benz Owners Club magazine that both of these manufacturers absolutley forbid adding any additive to their cars but the only one they do endorse is the Techron.
Since I don't drive the Benz much, I add it just to keep the fuel injectors clean. Have had no trouble. The Techron isn't cheap but sometimes it goes on sale, just make sure you get the real Techron made by Chevron in the black plastic bottle with the Chevron logo on it.
I use no additives of any kind in my 68 Corvette as the engine has less than 100 miles on it and I don't want to mess anything up.
Just my 2 cents
Kurt

Lucas oil products are the best. They're not like this stuff on tv where they drain the oil and drive the car without damage. They make no wild claims. If you have ever used Lucas, you know it's slippery stuff.

Been using Lucas Oil products for the past 60,000 miles with absolutely no problems. Just turned 100,000 miles!

Once a year I run a quart of Risoline through the ol' engine just before an oil change. Then I put in 4 1/2 qts of Castrol GTX 10-30 with 1 bottle of Lucas oil treatment.....she purrrrrrrs like a kitten and runs like a "raped ape"!

I ran a quart of Lucas oil stuff through our '67 Jaguar, and that thing runs beautifully for 140k mi on the engine.

I've also run the Lucas Injector cleaner through my Saturn, and that stuff I can honestly say works. When you've got a fouled injector on a 4 cyl engine, you can tell that it's not running right. I noticed after I ran the tank down that the car was running better on the next tank. Stuff works as advertised!

Is that stuff still around???? IMO with today's advanced motor oils and a little Techron in the tank every few months (unless you already use Chevron) you'll be just fine without any additional additives.
