What do I have to do to get this monster out ?? I removed the four bolts that hold it to the firewall, now it seems it is still attached to "something" behind the center console...
Do I have to disassemble the dasboard to get this thing out ??
Are you trying to remove the inner box? or is that off and the core wont come out? A/C car or non A/C?
I guess it's the inner box. It's the big box that's behind/under the dash on the passenger side.
The PO removed most of the A/c (it didn't work). My heater is bypassed (it didn't work and is not needed here in FL).
Now I want to remove the entire thing and fill the hole in the firewall. It's amazing how much heat enters the interior with the sidepipe headers
Anyway, I'd like to remove it without destroying anything so it can be re-installed IF the next owner wants a heater ....
If you removed the visible inside bolts, and the outer upper bolts, then you probably still have 2 under the box, on the eng comp side. There are 2 bolts that are hard to see, under the outer box, going inside to the inner box. When all bolts have been removed, both halves should be loose.

It looked sooo easy and simple when I started
TIA
My 76 had only four bolts. Three bolts from the inside and a nut on the outside. I had to remove the right side dash pad and remove the A/C vents. I don't believe it will come out by pulling straight back. After it breaks loose you will have to swing the top of the box down for the heater core tubes to come up and out.
I am about to change my heatercore and from what I understand you have to take the dash out from the center gauge cluster all the way over to the passenger side. Remove a brace bar, remove the heater core enclosure that is gasketed and then remove the heater core. I am told to replace it is about a 6 hour project. My car has AC.

I think 6 hours is reasonable, depending if you got to make a beer run!
Get all the parts you need ahead of time; heater core, seals for the air conditioning ducts, hoses if being changed, clamps, BEER, etc!!!

There should be one bolt on the firewall (passengerside). Did you remove the rubber hoses? Hard to get off??? Cut them...then tear the remainder off. Replace them with new.
I also assume you have removed the guage cluster...you need to to get at the ducts. Passengerside consol side panel is off???Also removed the glove box?? Once you have it loosened off you need to pull gently and turn...it will come out.
Open the box and replace the core. Install in the reverse.
It's already moving, the bolts seem to be all out... it appears it's still attached to 'something' behind the center console.
I don't want to pull too hard, don't want to break stuff...... I think it's only the heater/cooling ducts but I'm not sure.

JD is steering you in the right direction. Got to get center consolve out, loosen driver's console, passenger seat should be out by now as well for space to move around, all ductwork, glove box. The controls for the heat A/C connect to top of box which I believe is same as 78.
Once you get all four bolts including the one that connects from the engine compartment (upper right), it will remain snug due to the gasket that has sealed well for the past 25-30 years. A good pry should pop it off.
