So, what do I need to know to replace the crankshaft seal that is in the Timing Chain cover?
No, I'm not taking the cover off. I'm replacing the Harmonic Balancer and have been told to replace the seal now also.
After ordering 3 harmonic balancers from different local auto parts stores and having them all be wrong I will order from Ecklers tomorrow.
I'm working on a 1974 with 350/L82 engine. The balancers so far have been either the wrong diameter (old one is 8"), wrong weight (old one is 12 1/2 lb), or wrong thickness (old one is 1 & 9/16 at the outer edge). Ecklers says theirs for "high performance" engine is the right one.

Anyone have any experience with this part from Ecklers?
The seal in the cover can be pulled off, no issues here; just slightly tap the new one in with a hammer, coating it with grease beforehand (moly grease from a grease gun works well).
With the new timing cover gasket you should get a new rubber piece that goes on top of the oil pan and under the timing cover. You will have to cut the old one off even with the block on both sides and put about 1/4 inch of gasket sealer there to keep the oil in.
