First I would check all of your cable/wire connections at your battery and at your starter solenoid.

It could be a loose and/or bad connection.

It's either a loose connection or a low battery. Sometimes the chemical action of using it after it's sat for a while will let it "catch" after you've applied a load for a short while.

it has sat for about 3 weeks. but i can run it for a while cut it off and it will still do it. i will check connections i just thought it might be solenoid because when the key is turned over it will just click will not try to turn over. it has done this once before a while back and hadnt had any problems until yesterday. thanks.

If it does it after you've driven for a while, it sounds like you have a heat-soaked starter. My guess is that you have two problems here - one is a bad connection between starter and battery (or a battery that is going bad), the second is that the starter is overheating.

I would start by putting a voltmeter across the battery (verify it's at 12-14VDC) and watch the value when you try to start the car. If the voltage isn't really dropping-- it is a problem with your starter circuit, not the battery.

If the battery voltage makes a big dip-- that tells you the starter solenoid is engaging, the starter is pulling current but still not turning. That might mean a bad starter or a weak battery. I would then put a charger on the battery and try to start it. If it starts-- it's probably a weak battery. If not I would start looking at the starter circuit. I would move my voltmeter to the starter and verify control voltage to the solenoid when you turn the key. I would also verify battery voltage at the starter itself.

If you trace it out with a meter and watch the voltage when you try to start it, you can somewhat pinpoint the problem.

I would first check your ground straps - block to frame, starter to frame/block and battery to frame. Take them off and clean both sides (cable and frame) with a wire brush.

Then, if the problem isn't resolved, go forward from there as suggested above.
