Default Question for you C3 guys

I used to have a 1980 C3 that I put a lot of work into. I enjoyed the car and especially the atmosphere on the C3 forum. Everybody seems to love their cars and the devotion is unbelievable. I sold it to get to several other vettes and now have a new C6. If any of you have read the C6 section you will notice that I have been bashed for starting a thread that said I was tired of all of the complaints about the C6. My question is: Why are you guys so devoted in spite of any flaws in the C3 design when the C6 guys continually rant and bash their cars? I miss the C3 forum. I think i will start reading the C3 forum and pretend you guys are talking about the new vettes. Maybe you guys could have an etiquette class for the C6 people

I think we're dedicated to the C3 in spite of it's flaws because we can always upgrade the engine/transmission/suspension, but you cannot make any other car look this good.

The body style is the best in my opinion.

You also have to remember that many of those C6 guys aren't Corvette lovers, just C6 owners.

I think you should stop pretending and get another C3 J/K

But seriously, the C6 is just an awesome machine. But we have all been there with new cars, right. Regardless if it's a new C6 Corvette or a new F-250 diesel pickup, folks expect perfection on new products, and feel the manufacturer is on the hook towards keeping that perfect "new" feeling. "it's what I paid for" right?

C3's on the other hand are so far out of warranty, etc.. that we all know it's up to us to keep it running/looking right. Yeah, we might sub out some of the work, but it's our responsibility - not the local Chevy dealer.

Additionally, C3s are classics - maintaining and driving a classic is a different feeling than driving a new car. We're cruisin' in a piece of history. C3s have lines that transcend the ages. They look as good today as they did in the late 60's when they were seen for the first time. We're all just happy to have a piece of that history.

I think it's because we love the car more than they do, meaning we went into the purchase of the car knowing it was 30+ years old and was gonna have problems. We were not looking for a perfect car, so we go into it knowing that it will be a love/hate relationship from time to time. Plus, unless you got a c3 new a long time ago, you really have to love one to buy one. It's still an old car. We get it.

Many (not all) new c6 owners buy their cars with a different frame of mind. They expect it to be perfect and remain that way even when they neglect or drive the car "hard". ie. race, showoff, have fun....that takes a toll on cars. New owners don't always have the same mentality as older c4 and earlier owners, or many of them would park it in the garage and put about 1000 miles on it a year instead of using it as a daily driver. To them it's just a sweet car.

There is an exception. Those that puttheir c6's in car shows and baby the hell out of it, or those who own another older Corvette and treat their c6 the same as they would their c3/c2/c1...

no matter what c? you drive, you're welcome here.

A lot of C3 owners own their cars because they always wanted one. Not because they are the newest and greatest. That being said, I like all Corvettes.

Still new to owning but ditto. And once I sat in the drivers seat for that first drive and saw the view out over the hood with those big curves over the wheels, I was hooked! I don't think I'll ever get tired of driving it.

BLUSHRK, I have too agree. That is a great attitude.

I am going to cover C2's and C3's with this reply, because to me it's all about the chassis. Both styles were awesome, but the chassis, in it's time, was futuristic. IRS, 4WDisc, vacuum controlled everthing, T-Tops. roadsters, sidepipes, and the best driving american car during it's entire tenure, in my opinion. It's a drivers car, easy to work on, and sitting in the cockpit at 70-80mph on a country road is a thrill beyond compare.

The new C6 is nice, and if I won the lottery I would buy one, but not until after I bought a 67 Vert to go with my 73 coupe.

Bracevette,
I guess I'd be a pissed C6 owner too if I spent $50k and every time I lined my car up at a car show alongside 20 other identical cars, nobody came over to look at them. While a C3 (at a fraction of the cost) will draw ooh's and aah's from old and young alike at the same show.

As stated earlier, it's a completely different group of people. Mostly (but not all) C3 owners seem to be real "hands on car guys" who share a common interest...."I'm working on this..." ...."been there, done that repair"..."try this"...etc.

And it seems that most (but not all) C5,6 owners are first time Corvette buyers who, although they have the money, don't really have the need to crawl under their car at a show and get dirty just to share a repair tip with another C5,6 owner.

You've seen the C3's here. Everything from bone stock, low horsepower cars to radical mods with engines pokin' through the hood. No two are really identical. Maybe the C6 guys are prone to bitchin' 'cause their satisfaction level isn't very high for the amount of invested money.

Why don't you sell your C6, buy 4 or 5 C3's and come on back where you know you can have a little fun?

Well...I bought my 78 L-82 4 Speed in 1979....it had 9,000 miles on it at the time...so I have transitioned as a "new" vette owner to an old one....back then, there was not any C-1 vs C3 crap...we were Corvette owners,period...

I bought my C3 because it was the car I couldn't have in high school. The '82 and I are "connected" as I graduated in '82. Also, the C3 is just nothing short of a work of art.

I fell in love with a C3 when I was around 14...waited all my life to get it. So, I won't complain since I know what I wanted and was getting. I had no preconceived notion that it was going to be perfect...besides, I enjoy working on it.

However, with new cars today, I expect much more and would probably complain if spent money on a C6 and it wasn't perfect.

Exactly why I bought mine. Remembered falling in love with it back in 8th grade...Nice angle in the pic! Be right back...I'm gonna go climb up on the roof and hang off to take pics!
