Default Engine paint removal

I have a set of new vortec heads with black paint on them. Id like them to be chevy orange. Should I just paint over the black or should I take the time to take them all apart, strip the paint off and then paint again? Should I bolt a valve cover on them, plug intake and exhaust ports, rough the paint up wit ha brass wheel and then paint directly over that?

I have an engine block that needs to be stripped as well. It wont be as challenging as the heads because it is already apart. I figured I would just use some chemical stripper on it.

Here's what I'd do (but what do I know??):

- If the black is on good and seems to be stuck on well, I'd just rough it up a bit and paint on it directly. The black might be a good base, and it's already been baked on.

- If the black is flaking off, I'd get some stripper and remove it as you described and start from scratch.

Good luck -

Oh my goodness....

What he was refering to was the heat of the engine has hardened the paint "baked" it on to the heads.

so it not actually done in the oven. I woul just take some fine sandpaper and rough up the black paint that is on there now and then spray several thin coats of the orange paint....allowing it to sit 20 minutes between the thin application of orange paint that you spray on.

So just spray a thin coat, let it sit and dry for 20 minutes...then another...let it sit, and do this for about 4 or 5 times and you should be good. Becuase the heat of the engine will bake the orange paint just like the black was done.

Good Luck,
Jim
