Default Window Storage Tray?

Hi,
My 71 Vette comes with the removable rear window.
Have a few questions:

Do many people actually take it out when driving?
Does it get too windy with it removed?

I do not have a storage tray in my car-
DO I NEED ONE? (Any other suggestions on how to store it?)

If I do decide to get one-
Will this one fit a 71?
It was removed from a 1972 Vette.

Or do I NEED the one that is slighlty more round shape?

Thanks Again

My 72 tray is like the lower pic....works well. I find that it is less windy and quieter with the window removed. I seldom install the window except during winter. Anytime I have the tops out....the window is also out.
Have fun.

I did get bags for the T tops-Havent gotten any straps yet-
Can I just wrap the window in a blanket and place it under/on top of the T tops in their bags?
Just wondering...

I am pretty sure that the tray was re-designed MID 72. The square is the older version which (I think) is fiber board. The later version is fiberglass. Try to find you a later version, unless you already have the older one. Either should work.

Eric,

The top picture is of the '68 thru '70 design window storage tray. The lower picture is of the '71 & '72 style tray. The rear bulkhead (inside carpeted vertical wall, dome light is on this surface) contains 2 built in hinge plates that the window storage tray connects to. These hinges are located further apart for the 1st design tray and closer together for the 2nd design tray.

These hinges should still be in your car, be sure to measure the distance between these accurately to determine which tray to use. The front clasp is also of a different design. The 1st design tray uses a spring steel complicated bent bracket with a solid metal bar with raised lettering saying BACK WINDOW STORAGE. The 2nd design tray incorporates the same lock cylinder style catch that is used for the 3 rear storage compartments.

Thanks-
Seems like everything was removed from mine-
The square one is much cheaper $50 instead of $200-300

I also like to drive with the back window out. That's why I love these
years on the sharks. My '72 has one as in the second picture, but I am not sure if you can use the other one.

I have a 70 and purchased the second design on Ebay not knowing there where 2 designs. It fit fine attaching to the existing hinges. The latch did not work so I purchased a household window lock and mounted and it works fine. I later purchased the original design but did not install it since it was not as well made as the second design.

Window comes out in spring and does not get put back in until fall. With the TTops off and the window out wind noise is minimal and it operates like a convertible with a roll bar.

Take that window out and enjoy. Even if it rains no water gets in as long as you are moving.

I wanna thank everyone for their input on the Storage Tray.
Kinda funny story-
I am a VEERY new Corvette Owner-
Drove it once(illegally-no registration/insurance) o get it home.
Anyway-That was the most fun 50 miles I have driven.
People asking what year at least 5 times.

Anyway-
I thought the shelf was located near the bottom of the rear storage area.
So figure dmine was missing.
AFTER EARLY SHARKS Post-I decided to tey and find the hinges to see if I could measure them before I bought the other tray that was ending on ebay.
HAPPIEST SURPRISE.
MY TRAY IS ACTUALLY THERE!!!
YEAH!
Save me some CASH!
Its just all metal-
Is there any cushions that go on the actual tray to act as a buffer?
Thats the only question there as it opened and closed so easily.
WAS MY FIRST NICE SURPRISE.
Generally findhing I am lmissing stuff or not put in with the write screws.
That type stuff.
Anyway-
If anyone can give me any info on cushions that would still be appreciated.
THANKS

The tray is suppose to be like in picture 2 made from fiberglass. If is metal then it is a 'homemade' unit. On the factory trays there should be two foam blocks that the window rests on towrds the front of the tray. The window fits under a clip on the back edge.

Red70, Do you have a pic of the latch that you used? I need to come up with one also. Thanks, Craig

I have hardly ever used the storage tray. I think about poping the rear window when I am driving and just reach behind my head and pull on the latches and slip the window behind the seats on top of the wheelwells and behind the shoulder strap retractors. It sits quite well there and doesnt slide around. Dont pull the tops much but the rear window comes out often and much easier to close up when you stop. Some people give you strange looks when you pop out the window on the freeway.

With the window out and the t-tops back there too, there isn't much room for anything else.

PO sold my removable rear window and tray He put a piece of plexiglass in it's place. I have a replacement sitting in the garage along with a tray. Never put it in.
