Default Engine ID help?

Which #'s on the VIN tag should match the #'s on the engine pad? Is it the first 6 or the last 6? The reason I ask is I'm looking at a 69 vette and the owner states that the engine pad letters and numbers are CLA 195978 as best as he can tell and the first 6 #'s of the vin tag which he says are very readable are 194379. I know they're not exact but he changed his thoughts on the engine pad #'s a few times so they must be hard to read. Any thoughts about the letters CLA? Trying to determine if this is the original block so any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

If memory serves, it's the last six digits of the VIN.
Example: 19S700000 for the 1969 models.

1 Corvette
9 year
S St. Louis
7 car line series (same for all '69s)
00000 consecutive unit number

No CLA code for '69. Engine suffix should be a two letter code.

Thanks Mike. The owner got some information after I hung up the phone and he tells me it's a 73 corvette engine. I checked and sure enough there is a CLA code for 1973 vettes with Automatic transmission rated at 190 HP. Thanks.
