My 1981 now makes air leaking sounds when I turn on my head lights. Center dash lights work both bright and dim although no speed or tach lights at all. I removed the cluster and cleaned all light bulb contacts and still no dash lights> The blinker lights and high beams now work. Any ideas? Bad switch?\ Has someone had same problem?
you have a couple problems. Start with the vacume, trace down and fox the leaks on the lines for the lights. Check the lines on the Light sw.
Check the light sw for the dash lights too, turn it back and forth, pul it out and make sure it works.
I put the vacuume lines on tight to the switch and after doing that it now makes the leaking sound. I think the air is leaking from some where in the switch not the lines. The part that confuses me is the lights dim and go brifgt on the center console but no lights on the cluster. Could be the plastic wiring curcit.
It could be the switch or it could be the wiring. No point in throwing money at it until you figure it out. Best think to do is drop the switch. Take off the trim ring on the out side. Take to cover off the bottom of the driverside dash...near the vaccum bypass switch (you did realize you had a bypass??). Reach up and push the pin with the spring on it to release the shaft and **** for the headlight switch...pull it out. the assembly should drop down. Find the cause of the leak. The switch is two parts...half for the dimmer and half for the headlights. It sounds like you have a problem in the back half...part the vac lines attach to. Check the vac lines and wiring in this half.
I remember when the dimmer part on mine went. I had headlights, speedo and tach lights but no cluster lights. sounds like your problem is the opposite. The switch does come apart. Be careful if you choose to open it...there are contacts and springs inside. They need to go back together a certain way. I think your part with the vac lines may have separated.
Yhanks for the advise, I think you may be right about the switch. I also think I may have the two vacuume lines crossed that is why I now hear the air leaking sound. Does anyone know which port the hose with the blue line go to on the light switch. Inside port towards pull **** or other towards engine?
