OK guys,
I need some help here, I patched a spot on the front of my car that had a chunk out of it and then masked off around it to paint it. when I took the tape off I now have a ridge where the tape was.
What would be the best way to sand out the ridge and blend it to match the rest of the paint?
maybe I shuld have not masked it and just fogged the paint on a larger area, or maybe that's what i should do now after sanding it and feathering it out.
any help or sugestions would be appreciated.
TIA
ide use some 1500 and see if you could block it out.....then buff the entire area. If you break through, grab the 400-600, sand little larger area, and then respray without the tape
When you do this, make sure you use an alternating pattern (45degrees) if possible otherwise you will see lines later. Also.......... when you wetsand it, try adding some dishsoap. Just a little. (and again the water will make it cut faster but will give a smoother finish).
When you get to where you see some minor scratching still, go find some 3M Finessit-II. (you can find it at the normal body paint stores, or, even Walmart in the marine section............WestMarine....etc).
Depending on what kind of paint you used you may be able to block sand the ridge off and respray the area this time blending out with no tape. You will then have to clear the area and the best way is to clear the entire panel. Sometimes you can get a successfull blend with the clear but you stand a good chance of the edge breaking back and showing. If you used a non catylized paint it will probably have to be totally removed or it will lift when you apply the new paint.
i used tape but rolled the edges back so that the paint would feather out under the edge. It worked ok, probably will go better each time I try it. To me it was really hard to make a good repair the 1st time I tried. Like Corz said I also will end up sanding all of it off someday and re-repairing. Even with black paint it only shows up in just the right light.

The paint I used was mixed from NAPA, Martin Senour paint, put in spray cans for this, don't know if it's catylized or non. I did a spot on the lower front fender panel last nite to see how it looked. Looked good when I was doing it haven't looked at it yet this morning, will let you know when I check it out.
