As I posted before I am in the process of getting a '68 vert. Price and everything is agreed upon, But I am having some paperwork problems. the owner does have the title and will sign over to me as well as a bill of sale. But there is a transfer hold on the vehicle due to the fact that he had a DUI a few years back and never turned in the vehicles license plates which is state law. well all paperwork and plates was submitted to the state and waiting for it to be processed, which takes about 2 weeks, but the owner is leaving on 8/11/06 (probably before it is processed)for a month and he wants to sell by then, and if I don't get it by then who knows what he plans to to do with it. should I buy it anyway and hope that they approve the transfer and get required paperwork when he returns, or if I am not able to transfer, possibly part it out to get some of my money back. or just walk away... I appreciate all opinions...
Once again this is the car in question.. agreed at $4000.00
i would think that if you have the title and bill of sale signed by him
and get copies of the paperwork that proves he turned the plates in
that the 2 weeks processing woldnt present a problem.
i also think you should have a DMV help line that you could call and explain to them that you ALREADY purchased the car, have title and bill of sale in hand and was wondering how long it will take for his hold to be removed so you can transfer in to your name.
if hawaii is like NJ when you are busted for DUI they want the plates turned in so you wont continue driving the car once your license is pulled and since the car is being transfered from him to you they may very well go ahead and do it especially since he should have turned them in 2 years ago.

this is exactly what they require here in hawaii, but he didn't turn the plates in because they were personalized plates that had his daughters name on them so he wanted to keep them for sentimental reasons. The DMV can not give me any information because I am not the owner, but I know for sure that the plates and forms were turned in because I took them in myself, They said as soon as these were turned in and reviewed, they would issue a consent to him. I explained that I left a deposit for the vehicle and didn't want to lose my money on this. But they say it's up to the chief administrator to make the decision. Meanwhile he may decide keep the car if not sold by next friday.
i would call the go to the local title office near you and see if what you have will be good enough. it sounds like to me you are just waiting for the state to process a some red tape.
in texas, a signed title, bill of sale and signed transfer doc would probably be good enough.
is the car near you or do you have to get Matson to ship it? seems like if you have the car with the docs its just a matter of time.
it looks like you are stealing this car from him so i would do whatever i could to make it happen. nice deal.

Howzit ,
I did just that today, went back to the DMV and spoke to a lady that was more than helpful, kinda odd for a DMV employee. Well from what she says as long as I have the signed title and bill of sale, I can actually go to court and demand that the title be transfered to me... That being said, I bit the bullet. The car is about 10 minutes from my house and I am having it towed home on saturday.. Will post more pics at a later time.
thanks guys for your input
Number one he is legit in which case you have bought yourself a straight looking C3 for very little jack.
Number two he is not legit in which case you say sayanora to any monies you give him.
I would start by asking the DMV to do a title search to see if this person does indeed own the vehicle. I was involved with a deal once where a person signed a car over to me and I got the title. What I wasn't aware of was a former wife had applied for and gotten a duplicate title. Possession of the first title was worthless. If there are no duplicate title's on record then make sure that the person selling the car is in fact the owner by politely requesting a picture ID "for your records" that you match the name on the title.
If he decides not to sell it then he must/should give you back your deposit. Having the car is big in your favor though. For one it would make it hard for him to change his mind especially since he signed the car over to you. I probably would rent a storage unit and keep it there until paperwork is clear though. This may just be a case where you have to wait for the DMV to grind away at there normally snail like speed. Good Luck.
Any back taxes issues?
I would do whatever it takes to get that Vette home, a.s.a.p.
How's the sale of the 76 going?
The car was last registered in dec 2002, which is going on 3 years behind now. from what the DMV had mentioned, I may not have to pay any back taxes since he finally did surrender the plates and I am only taking possesion now. But at most the back taxes are only $600.00 which will bring it current to dec of this year, then it will be about $147.00 yearly. I did have the vin# checked and he is the owner and the only hold is from his DUI. But all paperwork has been submitted and just waiting for the consent.
The '76 was just sold the other day.. Somehow I feel I should've kept that one.. it was just about ready for paint.. But now this gives me more money to put into the '68
I agree that it looks like you are getting a bargan and I would act quickly before the seller has time to leave. If it were me I would spend a few bucks just getting a lawyer to look over everything and maybe he/she can help move the DMV along with the paperwork.
But I would definitly get the car in my possession.

been there done that. I sold my 81 to free up money to restore my 71. sorta regret selling it because it was completely finished. I have not driven a corvette since I sold it 8 months ago. this is killing me, I need a C3 fix
