My engine compartment is almost bare now, and I need to paint the firewall soon (I assume this is possible?). What kind of prep work should I do to the surface and what can I paint it with?
Regular paint preparation techniques with particular attention paid to possible oil and dirt contamination. You can pay for more expensive paint, but Krylon semi-flat black off the shelf at Wal-Mart is a near perfect match for the factory black.
You should expect to find the lower reaches of the firewall have less paint on them. These areas did not get much attention during blackout
Take your time. You might run across grease pencil factory marks while you're in there. Jot these down for your records before you scrub them away or paint over them.
I've got a grease pencil "6" on the passenger's toe kick on my '68.
Easy Mike, thanks a lot for the detail. I'm feeling my way through the dark with just about everything here, so I want to make sure I do it once and right.
This is going to be a stupid question, but I'm not sure what exactly to do with that rough fiberglass in terms of prep. I figure I should make sure it is good and clean. Do I need to put any sort of primer on it?
I'm ready to start repainting metal brackets too. I suppose Krylon will work well with that as well?
I'm planning on putting some shiny sort of insulation down in the transmission tunnel and just outside of it in the engine compartment area. Will ahesive+heat from engine/transmission do alright when adhering to the paint?
I used eastwood's "underhood black" on mine, it layed down really nice.
I cleaned then scuffed what I could with a scotchbrite pad, lot of sealant and caulk material......then sprayed it on.
This is good. Make sure you use the factory tunnel insulation unless you want a hot foot. Also John Deere makes a great paint that matches the original color that is called Blitz Black. You can buy this at your nearest John Deere Tractor center.
Good Luck
Steve
